All you need to know ABOUT THE YORKIE TAILS This is a super great article. ONe member mentioned my boy had a tail and I was confused, so I took it to google and found this. I find it super interesting as I was not aware of this. So now I know. here is the link to the full article as it is copyrighted and I cannot post it, but here is hoping you all will read it and then comment. Is a docked tail a tail that has been cut off? http://www.yorkyclub.com/en/Ycm05_Tails.asp |
The AKC standard says a Yorkie's tail is to be docked to medium length. Correct tail carriage is at a 45 degree angle (slightly higher than the level of the back). Docking a tail does mean to cut the tail off. This is done between 2-5 days of age. Some countries have laws against tail docking so yorkies that come from those countries have long tails, but in the US a yorkie's tail is to be docked as it is the standard. |
Just saw your other thread. Your puppy is cute! Do you live in the US or are you in a country where it's illegal to dock tails? You'll see most of the yorkies on this site have docked tails since most of us are in the US, but there are some other members on here that have yorkies with undocked tails...some in the US but most of them are from other countries. |

Hi, I live in New Zealand and I have two yorkies with undocked tails. Its true what you said about them lookig scared with there tails down, I find it to be true. Your yorkie has to have its tail docked to show here but alot of breeders dont do it if they are selling to the pet market. I would prefer docked if it wasnt so mean to do to the little ones. |

Hi down younder:D I have seen many like this with long tails and to me they looked mixed breed. Why cant a pet have a docked tail as well? I had a Kerryblue terrier when I was a teenager and his tail was perfectly docked despite the fact he was a pet |
In NZ they are trying to stop tail docking altogether. Its more common to get an undocked pup than docked. When I was looking I tried to get pups that were docked but couldnt find any. I think with in the next couple if years you will be able to show dogs with tails. I so wish mine didnt have tails, but a lot of yorkie owners on here love there dogs tails. Its a personal choice I suppose. |

I was not aware of the tails being cut, I thought they were all born with those little knobs. You live and learn. Where I live ears and tails are ILLEGAL to be cut. I was at the vet this morning and asked and he said it is illegal to do either, or any kind of cosmetic surgery for that matter.:D . So my boy will have hig wiggley:D |
Initially I had thought... (and commented not so nicely about it) that Natalie's "breeder" docked her tail... and WAY too short. BUT, the more I look at where her little nub SHOULD be, I've decided by the depth of the bone structure that not even the most idiotic human alive would (and probably COULDN'T actually) cut a pup's tail the way Natalie's shows to be. So, I'm left with thinking that she was more than likely born without a tail at all. Does that happen? Is it very uncommon? Tail or no tail.... she's an angel!!! |
I'm no expert, but I've never heard of a pup being born without a tail. My boxer's tail was also cut way to short, but she was a rescue and I love what's left of her little and I mean little stub. |

1 Attachment(s) I doubt you can tell anything from this, as I really have to push in on her tiny bottom to even feel where the tail bone should extend from the base of the spine. (and PLEASE don't tell Natalie that I posted pictures of her nekkid lil' fanny!! She'll never forgive me!!) **no peeking boys!!** But she doesn't even have a little stub of a tail.... if they cut it, they really would have had to dig down deep to make the cut - which wouldn't make any sense, even with the most novice of "breeders".... Also, they didn't take off her dew claws - so I can't imagine they bothered with her tail. She must just be a beautiful lil' "freak of nature"!!! And I LOVE HER!! :) |
my puppy has the long tail...for a long time we debated rather to buy one while overseas because of this but he is adorable and it is so cute the way he curls it over his back. |
