Need info about Boys I have been looking for a new baby. I want another girl. Even though they are sold on a spay contract, the girls are way more expensive. I am wondering if I am excluding the boys for no reason. Will a boy always lift their leg? I need one who will squat on a pee pad. Is this something you can train? Zoey is 100% pee pad trained, so I need my new baby to go with the program. As you can tell I have never had a boy. |
Both of my boys were neutered at 6 months and they have never lifted their leg in the house, not even once. Very occasionally Malachi will lift his leg to pee on a tree in the park but to pee normally they both squat. I think if you get them neutered before they start the habit its not a problem. I love boys just as much as girls, they are so loving :) |
I thought I wanted another girl too, thinking like you, girls are easier to train to pads, and no leg lifting. Then the cutest little boy became available and I began to research the potty training subject. Our new little boy is already trained to pads and Ruby (our girl) has never caught on to the concept. I wouldn't rule out a little boy because of this issue. In fact, as good natured as this little boy is, I would probably not choose another girl. Also, I've heard it is much easier to bring a male into a home with a female, rather than adding another female. I'm finding this to be true. |
Aubrey lifted his leg in the house once, and I don't know why. hes neutered now, and we have no problems. He does hike his leg outside. Some boys don't lift there legs. Not all girls are sold on a spray contract. Mine wasn't. Is that just something that breeders do in your area? |
I have always preferred females over males because of what I'd heard about the marking, but ever since I got Kalani I have totally changed my mind! I absolutely love my little boy - he is such a little cuddler and very smart. I had him neutered at 5 1/2 months before he started any marking behavior and he was way easier to potty train than my female:) He does like to lift his leg to pee sometimes but I have one side of the potty pad up against the wall and that is the 'only' place he will lift his leg. Good luck on your search! |
Well my pup always squats at home on the wee wee pad and when we go outside sometimes when he's lazy he dosent lift his leg he does a semi squat :D but most of the time he lifts his leg only outside. |
I have 2 little boys both neutered a little later at 9 mths old and neither one of them marks in the house. One always squats on the pee pad and the other one just lifts one of his back legs about a 1/2 inch of the ground (it's so cute). They both lift there legs outside to mark but not inside. I think boys are great. |
Wicket is 9mos old and still squats, he has not been neutered. Ichabob was neutered at 6mos and never lifted his leg either. I have always had boys, My husband rescue a female Jack Russell terrier she lifts her leg to pee, she is 2 yrs old. figure that one out. |
Something else you can do if they don't like to squat is get a big coffee can and wrap a pee pad around it. Place that on top of a pee pad that is on the floor. Gives them a place to hike. |
I have 1 girl and 2 boys. We had Spike neutered young and he has never lifted his leg. We got Sugar at 17 months and he marked liked crazy. I had him neutered and the marking stopped almost instantly. He will still hike his leg outside but he doesn't mark inside at all and uses a potty pad with no problem. I love the boys. Our boys are way sweeter and more loving than our girl who is extremely independent. |

I had two male pugs and someone told me that if I could housebreak them and not have any problems w/marking I would do great w/a yorkie. I hope this is true! They say pugs are very spiteful and VERY hard to get them to not mark. I never had a problem - hope I can be that lucky a third time! |
Well, I've got some strangeeeeeee yorkies! lol My boy who I got as a puppy and is now 10 months old (TODAY!!) has never once lifted his leg..quite frankly, I don't think he knows how, and he uses the potty pads really well. I just got a 7 y/o rescue GIRL about 2 weeks ago, and she LIFTS HER LEG every time to pee!!! Can you imagine a boy that squats and a girl that lifts!?!?! LOL I guess the moral of the story is you never know what you'll get, but if you get a young male and neuter right away, I doubt you'll have problems! Good luck  Oh, and let me tell you, two are soooooooo much more fun than one :D |

Thanks to all the people who gave info. Now, I just have to convince Hubby that a boy would be OK. Thanks :) |
My boys are great. They are definitely more affectionate than my daughter's little female was. So far they have not hiked a leg. They are getting nuetered Nov 1. |
