It really is a mental illness; most hoarders are animal lovers to begin with, and truly do not recognize how awful their situation is to the health of their animals and themselves. The real people at fault in situations like this, I've always thought, is the COMMUNITY that allows people with mental illnesses to become recluses. Family, neighbors, or SOMEBODY needs to step in to make sure that situations like this don't happen by making sure that the potential hoarder is cared for before the situation has a chance to become so terrible.
I've adopted three animals that have come out of hoarding-type situations, including my yorkie girl. Her former keeper was elderly and senile, and had no idea how many dogs she had (over 30 yorkies running all over her tiny home, plus several cats and one larger dog) and how horrible and filthy their environment was. She loved her dogs, and still thought of herself as the respectable breeder she had been in her younger days. I felt horrible for her dogs, but I felt just as bad for her, and disgusted that nobody in her family stepped in to stop it. |
