Food and itching Hi Everyone! I was wondering if someone could shed some light or advice on a few things. 1) How long is it okay to mix soft food, or homefood with dry food? My Yumi is so picky, that she eats around the dry food for the most part and only eats very small amounts of the dry food. She will never eat it by itself. Is this bad for her teeth? 2) Yumi is constantly scratching this spot on her back just where her back meets her neck line. I have checked it out, nothing there. I have bathed her and even after the bath she is scratching. How do you determine skin allergies to food or other things? She has been switched to Nutro Ultra now, but she still scratches every so often. Are there any safe fur/skin conditioners to help dry skin? Thanks... |
She can eat canned food and homecooked forever. It isn't bad for her teeth and it is probably healthier since it's less processed. You probably should brush her teeth or use Petzlife on them though. |
What, exactly, are you feeding? To determine where the allergy comes from, you'd have to do an "elimination diet" to see if it's food. If it was seasonal, one would think her eyes would be watery and/or she'd be biting/licking her paws more. You could try a leave-in spray-on conditioner, but I don't know if that would truly do anything. Vets can do allergy testing, but it isn't cheap! |

I mix boiled down chicken and veggies with her Nutro Ultra dry food, or I mix in the Nutro soft food lamb & rice with it when I am in a hurry. I am just learning how to do the homefood, so I haven't done too much yet. She isn't licking/biting her paws or showing watery eyes. I will try the conditioner first and go from there. She is only 6 months right now, so it could just be puupy dry skin :animal36 |
Cali has a terrible itching problem and I have done the allergy testing, tried 3 different meds and she is still scratching like crazy. I switched her food to California Natural Lamb and Brown Rice and she is still scratching like crazy. I have just cut out milk bone dog treats and have them on the California Natural wellness bisquits. I am working with a person who is helping me with the proper supplements to get her healthy. I will post if we see results |

Knowing you're feeding chicken, I'd suggest taking her off of it for now. Feed white fish instead - and see what happens over a month or so. Does the kibble have chicken? |
There is a medley of lamb, chicken and fish in her kibble. It's Nutro Ultra. I was wondering about fish, but Yumi is so picky, she likes lamb, chicken and salmon, so far. No beef at all which I am happy about. Thanks for the advise. I will try the white fish :) |
I started giving mine the Salmon Oil with their food and no more itching. I feed Canidae, Harley didn't itch that much though but when I started the oil I noticed a big difference in only a few days. |
