I can't cut her nails... :( I feel stupid... I've always cut my cats nails... But... for a start Bit's nails are black, so I'm really afraid that I'll cut too much, then she hates it!!! She bites, tries to escape, cries... I'm sooo frustrated! How many times a year do we have to do it? Just for me to decide if I'll keep insisting or just take her to the vet or groomer... |
I cut Bella's every couple of weeks or so. Hers are mostly white so I sympathize, those black ones have got to be hard. |
I have Lacy's nails trimmed about once a month. She HATES it too and it's impossible for me to do it alone. So I normally hold her while someone trims them for me. I used to work at a dog boutique/grooming salon and she still goes up there to hang out sometimes while I'm in class so I will hold her and have a groomer trim them for me. |
We get Zoe's every 2 weeks, once with the groomer and once at Petsmart inbetween her 4 week grooming appointments. We find it way too hard to trim nails as we cut too much and cause her to bleed. We have such a hard time seeing her quick with her dark nails so we figure it's worth the money to pay a pro to do it. |
Yeah, it is tough. My yorkies used to throw a fit, but after doing it every 2-4 weeks for over two years, they learned to deal. They still cry and whine. I was afraid to do it at first too, and used to get really frustrated, but I asked my vet to show me and help me learn, and she said to just cut a little at a time. The tip of the nail will look white while you cut, and once you see a little black dot in the middle of the white, stop. That is the tip of the quick. Trust me, with how regularly they have to be trimmed, taking them to get them cut is a waste of money! It costs me over 20 bucks just for a nail trim for both my dogs! Can't afford that, so I just had to suck it up and be brave! Get some of the powder for the nails too so if you do cut it too short, you can alleviate the pain and bleeding quick. I cut Tina's nail too short once, and I felt so bad, but I stopped the bleeding really quick and she forgave me! You can do it!! |
It does make me nervous doing Ellie's also. I am taking a vet assistant class and the teacher/vet says something very interesting. He has made nails bleed.:) If you make one bleed, you make one bleed. It isn't the end of the world and the dog won't bleed to death. Just put some corn starch or something on it. |
My two absolutely hated getting their nails cut but I kept at it and now they 'tolerate' it and get a special treat afterwards. I also watch for that 'black dot' indicating the quick and stop when I see it getting larger. As for nicking the quick, yes, I have done it - but we survived. Oh, someone had recommended wrapping them up in a towel with only one paw sticking out at a time - it does help if you have a squirmy one:) |

Dior gets her nails clipped twice a month. She is pretty good with hers and do not complain only because we give treats and massages.:D |
I get so nervous doing mine, omg London squirms so much! I just cut a little at a time and then i get nervous and stop, i don't want to hurt them! They seem long, so im going to try to cut them tonight, i dont like paying $10 each just to get their nails cut unless i really can't do it |
I have always cut Sawyers myself, and he hates it! I trim them almost every week. I have my husband hold him so I can take my time and be careful. I took him to the vet the other day for a different problem, and she said I will just trim his nails while you are here. I said o.k., and the vet tech held sawyer while the vet trimmed his nails, and she made three of them bleed!! I was fit to be tied. Sawyer didn't even cry, but I did. The vet said it happens some times and it is not really all that bad. I am glad there are three other vets in this office ( she is new ) because after I offered to trim her nails, she didn't seem like she wanted me as a client. My regular vet said not to pay, apologized, and told the new vet " this lady waited with her baby to be nuetered, took him home right after he came out of the anesthetic, brings in stool samples once a month, and brings us cookies at Christmas, and candy at Halloween. Her dog is the last one you ever want to make bleed, or even whine for that matter!"' He hugged me and assurred me it would never happen again. It isn't easy, but I would rather cut one nail a day than have my baby bleed. :) |
1 Attachment(s) Ya'll should have to cut my Macaws claws...lol |
I cut Bella's every 2 weeks and she is awful, its a 2 man job for sure. I just keep at it until they are done and hope some day she will realize that it's going to happen like it or not and finally succumb |
Mine are trained to lay on their backs on the couch and get their nails trimmed. I will not fight them. Maggie learned when she was 1 1/2 yrs old and the other 2 have done it since they were babies. No pulling, whining or biting allowed. |
