Questions re: a spay.. Britney was spayed Thursday and she's been fine so far. I give her last dose of pain medicine tomorrow and she hasn't really been messing with it. When can I allow her to go up and down the doggie stairs? She is used to getting off the bed or couch and going to pee, get a drink or water, etc. Also, what does a normal, healing suture look like? I'm sure hers is fine, but it looks freaky! It looks almost like there is a tiny bit of dried blood in one little section between the suture (does that make sense?). Should I clean that off? If so, how should I go about doing that? |
Each pup is different, so it is hard to say. Sissy was back to normal activity within two days and never had a problem. Angel was a different story. She wouldn't stay still at all. She had to be wrapped in a blanket, her incision became infected, she wore a cone (E-collar) for a week and took pain meds and antibiotics as well. Because she wouldn't stay still, her incision oozed, bled and crusted completely over - which had to be removed by the vet so it would heal. The incision should not be red or swollen. You can probably try a little peroxide on a q-tip to clean the area. It if continues to look like dried blood or gets more of it, I would consult your vet. |
You're not suppose to let them jump or be over active (yeah right) until their stiches/staples are removed. They could stretch too far and...OUCH! That would be quite painful. Check the incision for redness, swelling, oozing (yellow or green) and smell. She should keep the area pretty clean, herself...but there's always the chance. If you can, post some pics of her incision. |

Thanks.. I'll take a picture tomorrow if I can; she does not like to be lifted up in weird positions. :D |
I know you were nervous about the spay and Im glad it went well..Reece is getting the big N on Wednesday and I am a bit anxious toooooo...cant wait till its all over with!! Dawn |
As Kimberly said, if they have external sutures or staples, they are supposed to be inactive till those come out. I think the biggest difference with Sissy and Angel was Sissy had only internal sutures (which I think heal much more effectively) and Angel had external - same vet clinic, different doctor doing the surgeries. |
As long as it's not red and swollen it sounds like it's ok. I'd clean the dried blood with a qtip and peroxide. |
