little bug....help! earlier today i had roman flipped over on him tummy and i saw a little tiny really skinny black bug crawl from where this leg meets the tummy to back by his butt... i try to get it but i lost it when it got to the black hair. then i noticed that very small black bead-like things thats werent bugs because they werent moving. so im immediately gave him a bath with some dawn in it (i heard that kills fleas, i dont think these are fleas but i didnt think it would hurt to try) after the bath i didnt see the bug or the black things. i told my friend about it and she said her ex had a puppy who had similar things but they were only around his butt. so i checked again just now and i saw the bug again. i tried to pick it out but i couldnt then it went up by his tail and i lost it again because of the dark hair. help! i need to know what these are! ive never had problems with fleas or bugs of any kind and im worried...can anyone tell me what these could be??? |
I sounds Like Fleas |
are fleas pretty easy to see?? i thought they were almsot too small to see, but i guess ive never seen any live ones to really know. also i thought fleas were more rounded i looked at some close up pics on yahoo and fleas didnt look long and skinny like the bug on roman.... if they are fleas should i buy some of that flea med i put between their shoulders or whatever?? ive never used anything like that before because i hear it can be bad... |
fleas are pretty easy to see - unless they are against black fur. They are fast little buggers, but they usually "jump". I'm not sure if what you are describing is a fea or not, but flea droppings are usually kind of rusty/reddish, so if you bathed him and those disappeared, you might need to use something for fleas. There are lots of shampoos that have essential oils in them that act as flea repellents, but they won't kill the fleas. I personally use a combination heartworm/flea prevention called Sentinel that is given once a month in a small pill. |
Sounds like fleas and flea dirt. They are very quick. |
the bug wasnt jumping but it was definatly fast. maybe this is a dumb question but ive never had a dog before so please forgive me, but what is flea dirt? im probably going to the store tomorrow to get him something for this. what can i buy from either petsmart or pet supplies plus?? are fleas seasonal things?? i kinda always thought they were and i think it seems weird that he would get them now when its cold outside. cant humans get flea bites too? |
also when a dog has fleas dont they have a bunch of bugs on them? ive only seen 1 each time and i dont know if i should but im assuming its the same one because its in the same area. |

no i didnt want to get him started on those long term because i heard where they can build up in their systems and eventually kill them. im sure that only happens very rarely, but i still didnt want to chance it. would those be good to just kill the fleas quickly then stop giving it? because with it being cold here i dont see how he could get anymore it after these ones are dead. |
well ypu may get them in your house too. I don't use these unless we get them but if i spot one we start the frontline plus. |
I use advantage on my dogs and only use it when I see fleas...once it is administered the fleas are usually gone within days..it lasts for 30 days..I dont reapply it until I see a flea again...I went all last year with no fleas..had to treat them once this month..this is a bad time of year for fleas. Fleas also produce VERY quickly..if you see one there are TONS more..in your carpets and bedding...after you put the advantage on your dogs, wash everything, vaccum and make sure you empty the vaccum bag OUTSIDE..oh and bath before you put on the flea oil...probably wont have fleas for long if you do all that!! Although it has been colder the past week in the Midwest, it isn't cold enough yet to kill off everything outside. Get yourself a good shampoo - Minksheen, Buddy Wash and Shea Pet are just a few that contain essential oils that will repell fleas. If you don't like the idea of a topical flea protection, I use Sentinel (pill form) which is a Heartworm preventative as well. According to my vet, heartworm meds should be given year round even in areas of snow as the temps have varied so much the past several years that winter is no longer killing off things it used to!!!! Your local pet store will also sell a "flea comb", usually kind-of small with very close together combs to rake out any fleas remaining after bathing. They aren't very expensive and can help you get them all off your baby. Watch for signs of fleas in the house as they can multiple extremely quick. Put on a pair of white socks and walk around carpeted areas. If you notice any on your socks, you'll need to treat the house to get rid of them. And, yes they bite humans too. They are similar to a mosquito bite. |
treat the dog with what you choose to but also vaccume all carpeting edges corners ect empty vaccume bags right awat or they can crawl bk out also there is a spray at the vet for carpets you can get. wash or steam clean everything you can in hot water.toys bedding ect. |
You may want to have someone spray your yard too. The flea eggs will hatch and the next thing you know you have more fleas. I live above 7,000 feet elevation, so we don't have dog fleas here, which is soooooo wonderful! We do treat the babies if we are going to a flea area. Good luck with the flea problem. We lived at sea level before, and had a constant battle with fleas. |
thanks for everyones advice...youve all been to helpful. i gave him a bath today with some stuff thats supposed to kill fleas then protect against them. i also vacuumed my apartment and my parents house put the powder stuff on the carpet and sprayed all the furniture. i washed the bedding too. so hopefully their all gone. i read on the internet where lemons are supposed to be a natural flea repellant. they said to boil a whole sliced lemon then let sit over night then put it onto their skin. im not sure if it will work but its worth trying. thanks again! |
i forgot to say i dont have a yard at my apartment so thats not a problem and he doesnt go in my parents backyard so i think were all clear there too. |
Make sure you emptied your vacume cleaner bags after vacuming! I hope all the little buggies are gone now! |
I only use revolution on chester during the winter and I use a flea comb on him every nite, also I use some eculyptysus oil on him they do not like that, sorry spelling in wrong on that. |
I also use revolution and I have not seen any fleas on my dogs for over 13 years. I strongly recommend it because it also treats heartworm. I have used it every month of their lives and none of them have ever been sick from it. It does come in different strengths for their wieght. I live in the woods and there are a lot of wild animals that come into my yard at night so I want to make sure that my yorkies and Husky don't get anything from them . I have had great luck with revoultion and would suggest that you get it. In the long run it will save you from having to use chemicals such as flea dip or flea shampoo on your pet and you will not have to worry about eggs in your carpet so much because it kills them too. (saves Alot of work) Hardwood floors the eggs will get down in the cracks and hatch. You don't have to bomb your house for infestation. ( more chemicals) In the long run I just think it is much better. It has saved me on tons of work and extra expenses. |
not that you want to hear this but my vet said if you see 1 flea then there are 99 others that you cannot see |
mad  im pretty sure i saw another flea on him tonight. im mad i worked so hard cleaning everywhere yesterday. and make matters worse this spray i got has left a greasy film all over everywhere its rele gross lol. would i need to get revolution from the vet or can u buy it in stores? what about the eucalyptus oil?? ive heard some things about there being so many more fleas then u can see but i didnt know i was THAT bad! i feel bad for my furbaby. im sure he has to be uncomfortable. also this may be kinda gross but can the fleas get up in his butthole?? cuz everytime i see them their rele close and im not sure if its normal but ive been noticing that his hole seems to be a little poofy. i thought maybe his needed an anal glands expressed or something like that but with this flea problem im not sure whats what. grrr im frustrated. back to the store tomorrow i guess.... |
You can only buy Revolution at the vets office. They can get you the right dose for his weight. It is definetly worth the price. I think it is like around $50.00 for a 3 month dose. It will kill fleas and eggs for 90 days and ticks for 30 days. It also is a heartworm prevention. My vet matches prices that I find on the interent. I just print it out and he matches it. Last time I got 6 months for the price of 3 months, pratically his cost. I will find the link and let you know what they are just in case you can find a vet that will do the same. You can call around and see which vet in your area sells it for the lowest price, you don't have to get it from your regular vet. As for the flea eggs dropped in the house. they can continue to hatch for a long time. The only way I have been able to reduce the infextation is by bombing the house. Follow the directions very closely. Then you have to vacuum and wash down all surfaces in the house after you air out the house for a couple of hours. As for his rear end, it sounds like he may need expressed if it is puffy. Hope this helps. |
here is one of the links I use. A 6 month supply is $57. I think you can order it from them without a prescription. Some sites do require a prescription. http://www.petshed.com/Revolution.as...w_zZ7ux_hgv8NH If your vet doesn't match the price, and is higher, I would just get the smallest dose you can and then order off of the net. |
Fleas I used Advantage on my cats and the fleas were gone in less than a day. And they were pretty bad. Now my babies aren't itching all the time. We are all very happy! :) ~Melody |
http://www.totalpetsupply.com/index....ct_id/5074.htm Here is a cheaper one. I think this is the lowest you could probably find it. |
ive been watching roman very closely and i havent seen a flea on him since the last post i made. theres not even any of the flea dirt. hopefully thats a good sign... i think my vet only sells sentinel (sp?) is that like the same things as revolution? anyone like one better then the other? i think im going to make an appt at the vet because he has a little scab or something on him stomach that has been there a couple of weeks. the vets will be able to express his anal glands right?? he needs groomed which i know they do there but i want to get his flea thing in control before i take him around other dogs there. thanks so much! |
