My BF was at the donut shop on Mon, He comes home and tells this elderly man asked him if he knew anybody that would take his dog off his hands so Bob say what kind. A Yorkie 1 1/2 years old male. Bob says why don't you want him any longer. The guy says well he still not house broken and needs more time than I can give him. So the evening guess what I got!!!!!!! Yes, a new addition his name is Cozmo. Well I think I am going to bigger problems than Bob thought. In 5 min Cozmo marked his area 15 times. HELP!!!!!!!! He has not been fixed. 1.When we get him fixed will this stop? 2.Different dog foods how do I do this with out Deiter getting into his? 3. Kennel do I put them together or do I need different kennel? 4. Not house broken but how do I take 2 with out getting tangled up 5. with Cozmo marking in area is Deiter now going to start peeing every where? I hope not he has been house broke since 6 mons old. I want this to work, but with I am already pulling my hair out Deiter never pee'd in the house but only 5 accidents Can I get thou this and keep this little guy Please help with any advise |
Deiter might start marking his territory if hes not neutered.. Cozmo might stop if he is fixed I'm not sure.. Good luck with him though! :) |
Yes Deiter is neutered. Thanks I will take all the help I can get |
To walk our two girls, I put my left hand through the handles of both and wrap the extra length around my wrist. This allows them to walk side by side, cross over each other as needed, yet not have too much length that they get tangled. It also leaves me with a free hand to separate them if needed (like if one decides to check out the other while there's business going on ;) ). Good luck with your new addition!! |
I will try that. Cozmo pulls really really bad. And Deiter just walks by my side. So this will be exciting. I will be the one behind Cozmo on the ground and him dragging me. lol |
First, congratulations on the new addition! I would get Cozmo neutered, and that will help with the marking problem. In the meantime, you might want to try belly bands to prevent him from marking in the house until you can get him neutered. As for the different dog foods, I just got a new pup and since Jake is 15 mos. old and eats twice a day, I have been free feeding the pup and only leaving Jake's water out. He's able to let me know if he wants his kibble, so it has been working out good so far. I would keep them in separate kennels until you find out how they will react to each other, especially when you're not at home. You can try a double leash, just make sure you get the ones that have a swivel thingy on it because they don't get tangled. You might have to start over with potty training and maybe crate Cozmo and not give him too much freedom until he starts doing better with potty training. Good luck to you!! |
yorkies where abouts in illinois are you? having him nueterd now will not stop the marking....i make yorkie one-zs that are great for that problem....looks like you might have your handsful trying to walk them...the double leash works great. good luck. |
I live in Bloomington. So what is a one-z? I went and got a belly band tonight hoping that would help from marking. I have never cleaned up so much pee pee. But I don't want to have to use that forever. So please tell me about a one-z |
1.When we get him fixed will this stop?- YES,, or at least it will lessen it some. After neutering it will take a bit to get the hormones out of his system but he will definitely cut down on the marking when you neuter him! 2.Different dog foods how do I do this with out Deiter getting into his? What I do with my dogs is crate everyone except the one I am feeding at the time. 3. Kennel do I put them together or do I need different kennel? different kennels. 4. Not house broken but how do I take 2 with out getting tangled up. I would take one out at a time if time allows. that was you can praise the new guy for pottying outside and he will understand you mean him. 5. with Cozmo marking in area is Deiter now going to start peeing every where? I hope not he has been house broke since 6 mons old. deiter might try to mark some to show the new guy that this is his territory. Bellybands are a god send for dogs who mark. My boy is neutered but still dribbles occassionally in the house so he wears a belly band any time he is out for a lengthy period. |
Thanks for all your info. I did go get a bellyband tonight, I didn't like that he had to be in Kennel all the time. But will I have to use this all the time he is out? Plus I don't want him to get use to that. Do I leave it on at night or only when he is out of the kennel. Thanks for you help |
I got all the info from the vet where Cozmo went. The man that had him hasn't even got any shoots for him since 5/9/06 He was born Jan 26, 06. This not good. I called my vet and the soonest I can get Cozmo in is this coming Thursday. We also found this bone that is shaped like a pen that sicks out under the breast bone. Doesn't seem to bother him. But don't have a clue what it is. So did we do the right thing by taking this little guy. Deiter and him seem to get along ok. They were playing tonight and Deiter took the ball from him and ran around the couch, and kept doing this so Cozmo couldn't get him. Then Deiter layed down with the ball and was teasing him with it. Got up on the couch and Cozmo followed. Then Cozmo stood up and Deiter went under his belly and jumped down with the ball. Cozmo looked around to see where Deiter went. I laughed so hard. It was just too funny. So do you guys think that we did the right thing by taking Deiter from this man????????????? |
I heard that once a male dog learns to mark (and left his leg to pee) that he'll always do that. I'm not sure if it's true or not since I got Brooklyn neutered before he started lifting. |
Marking One thing we do when we go to hotel rooms at the dog shows with intact males is we wrap a baby diaper around their bodies. Small dogs size one and the rest are usually size 2, with 6lbs and larger size three. You can use a baby diaper pin to make sure it stays or pull the tabs and make sure they are wrapped around his body. That way until you get him trained he won't be ruining the furniture. |
Of course you did the right thing!!! Sounds like he will have a good home now and a "brother", they will have a blast together and so will you! Good Luck with your new addition, it will get better!:D |

TXShopper gave you some great advice. Yes, invest in belly bands and Poise sanitary napkins, get them at wall mart, they absorb wonderfully (I use 1/2 of and change it probably 4 times a day).....change them often. I do keep them on my studs when in the house. However, I remove them when they sleep and of course outside..... |
Thanks everybody for wonderful info. Last Deiter got very protective of me. Cozmo went to get up in my lap and Detier went after him and knock him off of me. So I really have my hands full. I have been taking time alone with both of them and then together, a lot of time together, playing, grooming, walking. I hope that is the right thing to do. I read that somewhere on bring in a new dog. Thanks for all the great advise. |
I think its great that your baby has another to play with now! As you know, any new dog takes lots of patience! Not to sound harsh, but I think its a little late to wonder if you did the right thing! Give it some time. Unfortunatley, I for one do not think getting that dog neutered will stop the marking. Been there with my Chopper and fixing him (after a year old) did not stop it at all. I've heard the earlier the better results. Belly bands might have to be used forever in your house :( And your baby may start marking his territory too. Boys....territorial! I would walk two of mine, one in each hand. Works for me. Good luck with everything... |
I have relatives that live in Bloomington and Normal..:) I can't remember who wrote it on here, but, if you don't get then neutered before they start marking, they won't stop..if your'e not going to use a male for breeding, then you need to have them neutered before they mature..Our vet does it between 5-6 mos. I'm really sorry you're having these problems..:( |
Congratulations. I think getting him neutered would be a good first move. Crate training 101 is probably in order too. He probably smelled you other dog, and that's why he's marking so much. Best wishes. |
You did a very nice thing by taking him and giving him a better life. I have a female the same age and I got her at 13 months untrained and it has been a difficult time. But I love her to pieces and will continue to work with her. When I brought her home thre was some jealousy but they get along good now, but they do tussle a lot. Hang in there!! |
