Hello. Im a New yorkie owner Hello. Im a new yorkie owner, I have 2 female yorkies both were used as breeders and when they were no longer able to breed they were placed in my care, both have never been in a house always in a kennel so they are both loving life right now. they are both around 7 yrs old. does anyone know if they are to old to housebreak? im told they are current on shots and dont need to be spayed anf they both have Awful teeth :( so they will both need to see the doctor. One is really shy and the other is a cuddle bug :D |
I don't think a dog is ever to old to housebreak, I do believe that crate training is the easiest way to go with puppies but i'm not so sure how that would work with an adult dog, especially one that probably doesn't want to ever see a crate/kennel again. I'm sure you will get lots of wonderful advice here. Welcome to YT and congrats on your new girls, they are very fortunate to have you come and save them |
congrats on your new girls. Sounds like you rescued them. I don't recommend crate training for an adult dog that was kept in a kennel all it's life. You're just going to have to start by taking them out to potty really often and reward them with treats as soon as they go potty. It's probably going to take a lot of patients and work. So far as spaying, you will want to have that done because they will still continue to go into heat and I doubt you want to deal with that any longer or deal with possible pregnancies. Good luck |
Hi and welcome to YT that is great of you to take them in :) did the breeder tell you? or give you? their shot records? When you take them to the vet they will want to see proof or they'll want to redo them. Are the spayed? if not I would get them done and while they are doing that they can do teeth too :) I think they can still be potty trained it just maybe a little more of a challenge. |
Congrats...can't wait to see pics of the girls!! :yorkietal |
With lots of patience they can be housebroken, whether its to pads or a fenced yard,I dont know about on a leash though. As far as spaying goes I would think it would be in their best interest and when the vet has them under they could do any necesary dental work. |
aww congrats on the gurls!!! i would love to see pics |
Welcome to YT, and congratulations on the girls. It also sounds to me like you rescued them, they obviously weren't cared for much! Poor darlings, I'm sure life with you will be wonderful for them. |
training... best way i found to train an older dog is to have a pad in hand and when you see them start to go...slip the pad under them...they will eventually "get it" ... meanwhile leave a pad on the floor near where they are having their accidents and every couple of days move it closer to the door.... good luck .. & it is so great of you to take in 2 babies... the older ones don't get placed easily and they need just as move TLC..... |
Congrats :) Congrats on your girls! Yorkies are the best dogs ever! They are easily house broke with lots of patience and lots of treats. As far as their teeth they need them cleaned definitely Bad teeth in dogs can cause other health problems with their heart and kidneys. Goodluck and cant wait to see pics! |
If they're not spayed they do need to be spayed, and the vet could fix their teeth at the same time. You can try using Petzlife toothpaste for dogs, and I don't think they're too old for housebreaking. |
Welcome to YT. That is so sweet of you to take both the yorkies in. Good luck at the vet! |
congrat and welcome to YT! |
Welcom to YT....Can not wait to see pics of your girls....I would most definitely have them spayed and have the dental done at the same time...The housebreaking- I agree w/ the prev posts. I am not too sure about using crates since that was their life for sooo long :( Potty training a Yorkie period is a challenge...;) |
WELCOME TO YORKIETALK ! |
