Homework on Yorkies Hello! My husband and I are in the thinking stages of getting ourselves a small, lovable, lap dog for us as a companion. Maybe two. But as I said, we are thinking. We have lots of attention to give, however we do both work. We have lots of questions and that is why I joined YorkieTalk. We want to be sure we have what it takes to give to a Yorkie pup. We bought a book, for starters, and already hit a bump with our choice of the Yorkie. We have two cats and this book says that may not be a good mix. Is this true? |
Hi and welcome! Good for you for doing lots of research before deciding whether to buy a yorkie! I'm sure all yorkies are different, but my little guy got along just great with my son's cat before they moved away from home. The cat would play with him, but he would get impatient after awhile and then just walk away. The two never fought or anything. I'm sure others will have their own experiences to share, but that's mine. |
We have a cat and a new yorkie, and although they chase each other a lot, they are just playing, and don't hurt each other! Although I'm a new owner, I've already learned that this breed is HIGH energy! Georgia doesn't take it easy much! (at least as a puppy:) She is really fun, though! |

I have three Yorkies and three cats...they ALL play together except the oldest cat Lily(she's been through a lot of surgeries in her life and is very shy). They all love each other. If the cats don't want to play anymore they climb up high and the dogs can't get to them. The ONLY problem I've ever had with a Yorkie and a cat is with Lily and Chloe, my sister's Yorkie. Chloe gets VERY excited when she sees a cat because she wasn't raised around them, and she would pee on my bed where Lily was sitting...lol. I think you have an excellent advantage having the cat FIRST. That way the puppies can be raised around him/her from the time you get them, and they can be used to it by the time they're older. We have two yorkies, a sheltie, and a cat indoors. Also a golden retreiver outside. Most of the time the dogs ignore the cat, then sometimes they enjoy picking on each other. It will probably depend on the animals personalities. If you say "Get the kitty" in my house. . . My Ozzie will chase the cat and pick on her. I have quite the zoo! |
I have two cats and my roommate has a cat. Her cat and my younger cat get along great with Lacy. My older cat doesn't get along with anyone really... The cats and Lacy play together and get along just fine. Lacy does chase the cats a lot though. Of course the only one it really upsets is my older cat..the other two just wouldn't run if they didn't want her to chase them |
I have a cat, yorkie and a chihuahua. My 10 month old yorkie and my cat are best friends. The play together like children play. The run circles around the house. First they will pass and the cat is chasing the dog, on the next pass the dog is chasing the cat. I have never had any fights between the two. When I had yorkies 15 years ago I had a cat then also and still didn't have any problems. |
I have three yorkies and a cat yorkies ages are 2 of them are 5 1/2 years one is 7 months. my cat is 14 years. he and all the yorkies get along great. they always have. Him and Daisy are bff though. |
We don't have cats, but our dogs play nicely with cats that they visit. Good for you for doing all the research. Yorkies are a great pet, but IMO they do benefit from someone who can be with them a lot. And while they do fit on your lap, you usually have to tire them out before they are willing to sit still. They really are big dogs trapped in little dogs' bodies. |
Getting your dogs as pups will help with that, if they are always used to cats then they won't know any better. My cat is the oldest of all my animals right now and all the pups have done fine with her, although I don't know if our 18 wk old yorkie and 19wk old boston even know we have a cat. :rolleyes: She tends to keep to herself most times and likes to hang out in the basement. Cats are very good at getting away from dogs if they don't want to be bothered so I wouldn't be concerned |
