Yorkie owners in cold weather? Like...MN?? Hello all, i'm from Minnesota and I used to walk Uno for 3 miles daily. I can tell he's getting stir crazy, because I have been reluctant to walk him in this cooler weather (around 40*). Am I being paranoid about my baby getting too cold (he has a sweater...) or can (don't hate me for what i'm about to say) 'dogs' stand that weather while on a walk? I want to get him some booties to go with his sweater, but need to wait until pay day. lol. Perhaps I will just put him on the treadmill......it's just not the same:( OH- for those of you who use dog booties for cold weather, which ones do you recommend? I want some nice and warm ones that are water proof (you know, for when I have to take him out in the snow at -10* weather.....ugh...) |
I take mine out untll the temp is 20* then I stop the walks. I put a coat on them |

Well, I'm not in Minnesota, but I am in PA and we can get some nasty cold weather, although i'm sure nothing like yours. It was 47 when I came home and I felt guilty taking Vinnie out just to pee after I got home. He doesn't have any sweaters yet and I really want to get him some hoodies but I can't afford it right now, we just moved and hubby got a new job. Also.......his brithday is on Halloween and I really wanted to get some before then! I'm afraid cuz Vinnie is only 4 pounds that even with a sweater it's too cold for him. He got lots and lots of inside playtime tonight!!! |
I live in CT and it can get really cold here. I walk Conner unless it is below 20 degrees. I fleece snowman jammies that we use as his "snow suit". He wears this in 35 degree weather or below. We wear a sweatshirt or sweater when it is 50 or below. He wears nothing on his feet. It would drive him crazy and he would bite them to get them off. |

I can't be of much help because it's still in the 80's and 90's here everyday! When it does finally get cold it normally stays in the 50's..only occasionally dropping down into freezing temperatures. Usually early morning and late at night are the coldest times... Lacy is normally fine in a sweater. If I lived in a colder climate she's have some good coats too. |
I pulled out the hoodies and sweaters today, it was 47 here this am,,, waiting on pjs right now for my girls, my boys dont like to be confined, but they are by the heat registers at night.also they have nice thick cozy blankets, that helps. I tryed the footies and they pulled them off in seconds:rolleyes: I got some booties from my granson and tryed those, they looked so cute:) didnt stay on long either:rolleyes: |

I CANNOT keep booties or shoes on my babies. They just take them right off and it seems to make it harder on them to walk. I always go by their ears. I walk for about 10 minutes and then feel their ears...if they're freezing cold I take them back in...but mine can't walk long as it is...they get tuckered out...lol |
Although I don't walk mine in real cold weather, ours seems to do much better when the weather is colder than warmer. She does not do well in warm weather. However, she loves snow. I am not much of an outdoor walker. I use my treadmill; so Sophie doesn't get many walks. I would say that as long as her paws are not getting frozen or icy, and she has her coat and walks quickly, she should be fine going out for a short time. |

My two hate coats. I walk them when there is not so much snow that they get buried. They don't seem to mind the cold during the walk, and sit in front of a heater vent when they get home. They don't seem to mind temps in the teens, and we don't get much lower than that. We've had 3 snow storms so far this fall, and they love the snow. (Near Lake Tahoe). |
1 Attachment(s) We're in Des Moines, and it's cold here too. I put sweaters or a Tshirt and a jacket on mine when it's really cold out. My two don't wear booties-they HATE having stuff on their feet! But, I grew up in the Minneapolis area, and had a Chihuahua, and she wore boots-they were the "Paw Tectures" brand from Petsmart. They are waterproof, and fleece lined, and stay on with Velcro-very functional and comfortable, but not so stylish. There are much more fashionable booties now, but these did a great job at the time, before they came out with all the super cute ones! You might also ask Aprilove and Alaskayorkie about winter wear...Aprillove lives in MN, and I bet you can guess where Alaskayorkie is from ;) Another idea for you-try a 4-legged outfit to keep them warm. I have this jogging suit for Emma, and it keeps all 4 legs and her body warm but leaves room to potty too! (I got it from PetEdge last year, but they still have some available on Ebay!) |
I knitted some booties for mine for their feet do get so cold but no coats here they woudl never want to come in,if it is really cold it does not take them long to do thier buisness.The knitted booties do not really work well in ice storms though they seem to stick to it. DId you get any of the ice last year or are you more in northern MN |
