Hypoglycemia With the upcoming arrival of our new yorkie I want to make sure I am prepared incase of any Hypoglycemia issues. I know that Nutrical comes highly recommended but I was reading some info on it and some say to give your pup 1tsp on honey 2x per day. Have you ever heard of this or do you have any other tips. Thanks a bunch **Amie** |
Hypoglycemia Hi, congrats on your new baby. I always use Nutrical but my vet also says honey, pancake syrup, or some sugar water will also do the trick. Good luck with your new puppy! Pam |
lil bit of brown sugar Hi, I am so happy you are aware of the dangers of hypoglycemia....I wish I had been made aware of the threat when I brought my 4 month old 1.5 pup home. I learned the hard way...she is fine but I almost lost her! Anyway, I have made it a priority to learn all I can about it. I put just a bit of brown sugar in her drinking water....not enough to make it sweet. Also there is a formula that I copied from one of the members here that sounds wonderful.... 1/2 cup half and half 1/2 cup baby rice cereal 1 jar meat baby food, anything but turkey 1 tsp. karo or pancake syrup Mix together and add a little water if it's too thick for the syringe. Give approximately 2-4 cc's every hour (depending on size), then when the pup is doing better, you can increase the amount and decrease the frequency. After a day or two of this, as long as they are eating this on their own, gradually add softened kibble or canned food and slowly decrease the baby mixture until they are eating the food. Should take a week or so to do the change, to avoid upsetting their tummy |

Do I just give them a daily dose of honey or Karoo as a preventative or only if they start to show signs of Hypoglycemia? |
My pup had two attacks of hypoglycemia when he was very young and I kept Karo syrup on hand. My vet said it was okay to put a little in his water each day (it dissolves completely) to help safeguard his sugar level. I put in a dollop about the size of a dime. |
I have had nutrical on hand from day 1 and will always make sure I have it. I have never needed to use it for the purpose I have it thankfully. I gave her some off my finger daily the first few weeks after she came home to keep some extra calories in her but don't know that that was really necessary, it made me feel better tho since she was tiny tiny. The only time i've used it since then was when she had a tramatic injury 2 weeks ago, I gave her a dose and off to the vet we went. I think i've read somewhere that honey wasn't that great to give dogs so that is why I chose nutrical instead. |
Be careful with it and only give if they REALLY need it.. I think it is way over used and can cause medical issues. |
A few decades ago when I got my 1st yorkie I opted for honey instead of nutrical and have stuck with it ever since even when receiving a tube of it about 21 years ago when buying a pup, it was in her go home puppy pac! |
