How small is london? My maltese, Emma, was 2.9lbs when she was spayed, and she did okay :) Are you going to have bloodwork done? |
|
I would request Sevoflurane..a little more expensive, but it is the shortest acting and least harmful for the kidneys. I also made sure the vet intubated Bella and not the tech, just because their tracheas are so delicate. I wanted absorbable suture, so she didn't have to have stitches removed. I wanted pain meds given right after surgery, but only available if needed later (and she didn't need them). If there is more than one vet at the practice, make sure the one you want to do the surgery is doing it that day...they rotate usually. Of course blood work is a good idea...and good to have a baseline later if needed. |
Do make sure you get the pre op bloodwork done, too, just to make sure it's safe for her to have anesthesia. |

I agree with getting bloodwork and the pain medication after (shot at surgery time, then pills for home). We went with laser surgery for Lula and Emma and plan to have it done with Mckenzie too when she gets hers done soon. At my vet it came to about 300.00 |
What is the laser surgery? I'm holding off getting Lucy spayed since her bloodwork came back abnormal. The vet wants us to go and get an ultrasound done, but its $400 and her blood work wasn't outrageously off the charts. Her Acid Bile was pre: 14 and post: 15 and her Total protein was 4.9 the first time the second time we went back and got the blood work re-done it was 5.4. So I'm not sure what we're going to do, we switched her from Canidae All Life Stages to Innova puppy food, because the vet said that she should be on a puppy food, we also adding Missing Link. Do you guys think that i should have her blood work re-done before I pay for an ultrasound? |
Sallen15, what do the vets think might be wrong with your baby? |
they suspect that it could be a liver problem that's why they want to get the ultrasound done but they can't be sure that's what the problem is. My sister just went through all of this with her yorkie and nothign was the matter with him. I'm not sure but they said that it's possible that it's a liver issue and that she might not wake up from her spay. I just thought shunts and stuff the acid bile numbers were a lot higher. I'm not sure about the total protein thing...I looked at a website with all of the blood ranges etc. and it says normal is 5.2-7. and her first one was 4.9 (low protein) and her second one was 5.4 which is just in the normal range. she had a urinalysis done which showed that she wasn't losing protein through her urine, so that was good. |
First, I want to say that I know nothing about protein-losing diseases so I don't know what type of food is used for that. I do know that if MVD or Liver Shunt is suspected, Innova is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too high in protein. You might want to talk to your vet about it... |
Well I called them and asked them if there was a special diet I could try first and then have her blood re-tested and they told me that it "would be a disservice to Lucy to put her on a special diet that would be depriving her of nutrients that puppies need, if we aren't sure if that's what the problem is." So I asked if there was anything wrong with feeding her Canidae all life stages and she said that she was wreary of food that claimed they could fulfill the nutrition of a dog from puppy-senior and suggested i switch her back to just a regular old puppy food and perhaps add a supplement. So that's why I switched...what puppy foods are lower in protein? Because she was on Wellness Super 5 puppy mix before so i've been mixing that and the Innova together. Thanks for the help. |
