My Vet I took Ollie on Monday to have his stitches out from his neutering . There are three vets in this office and this time i saw the woman vet. I told her that i have been reading a lot about Yorkie coats and that i am very curious if Ollies is silky or cottony and she said very matter of factly (not in the least bit snotty) " Hey he is just a dog to me---sorry i dont know--- i still struggle tell a silky from a yorkie" Is this unusual? (As soon as i get my digital camera hardware downloaded and figured out i will post pics---because i know most of you can tell - his eyes dont glow orange or green in any of the pics!) |
If my vet said he is just a dog to me, I'd be looking for another vet. When I took Misha our Maltese to the vet she said "What do we have here a Terrier?" I found another vet right after. It took me 4 vets to find one that is knowledgeable with small dogs. I love the vet I have now, and he knows they are not just another dog. He knows they are my babies. He always spends extra time with questions that I might have. He's wonderful. P.S Silkies have a longer snout. |
I'd get another vet too. I want a vet who is knowledgeable about my babies, and their special needs. |
Silkys and yorkies look alot alike. I dont think a Vet would know the difference between a silky or a cotton coat. That just doesnt seem like something that they would study about. A breeder could better answer that question |
By the way My groomer that has groomed silkys and yorkies swears that chachi is a silky and hes not hes just a larger yorkie |
Hmmm... I agree about finding another vet, That was my first thought! If she would of just said --I am not sure or thats a good question for a yorkie breeder...etc... but the comment -"Hey he is just a dog to me" really shocked me. Thanks!! |
maybe she didn't mean like "It's JUST a dog." Maybe she meant it as "I know it's a dog but not sure of the breed". Vets should be familiar with most breeds, but you can't expect every vet to know every breed. And you certainly can't expect them to know the standard of each breed. They aren't AKC judges... So I guess it depends on how you think she meant it. If she meant it's JUST a dog, no I wouldn't like that because it's my baby, not just a dog. But if she was just basically telling you she wasn't an expert on dog breeds, then I wouldn't think too much about it. I would prefer someone that is more familiar with small breed dogs, but I don't expect them to be able to tell me what type of coat my yorkie has...because like I said, they're vets, not yorkie breeders or AKC judges |

Personally, I think finding another vet is a bit extreme. |
I have to say that the minute the "just a dog" came out of her mouth I would have picked Susanah up and left. |
Unfortunately some Vets. are like medical doctors..........no bedside manners so to speak. I've seen doctors who seem a bit quiet and reserved who were just remarkable, and some who were very nice and talkative that didn't seem to know what the heck they were doing. I would'nt mind a not so great bedside manner if they were real experts. The difference between a Yorkie with a cotton coat and one with a more silky coat is not the same as a breed of dog called a Silky. The Silky breed is a bit longer in body and muzzle, thicker boned, larger erect ears and silky coat. |
I think "he's just a dog" is a horrible thing for a vet to say. They are sapoably animal lovers and it sounded so negative. I personally would of left and looked for a new vet. I ask tons of questions and express all my concerns for my dog, from teeth, fleas, coat and my vet never says "oh don't worry about it hes a just a dog"  He educates me on what I don't know, and what I can do to help him (Toby). |
