anyone know what this is called? my friend called me today...her mom's friend has a yorkie that is 2 years old. he has been having trouble walking. she took him to the vet and they said he has some kind of bone deficiency in his back. that the cartilage (?????) in his back is pretty much gone. she is wondering if I know anything about this...and I don't know what it is called. does anyone have a clue what I am talking about??? |

hmmm...i told her to ask her mom what the vet said it is called. then maybe i can help her research it or something. but until i know what it is called....i am afraid that i am just not any help :( |
hmmm...years ago Zippy burst a disc in his back, and now walks with a limp. He has to see a Vet Neurologist for anything dealing with his back. What you are saying does sound like arthritis, and possibly a defect from birth since he is that young. |

my lab was diagnosed a few years ago with spondylosis the cartilage was gone and the spine was fusing together, we was on an anti inflamatory he did really well for a while but he was also 13 years old so getting around was not easy anyway. |
Is it Intervertebral Disc disease? Also commonly called slipped disc, herniated disc, ruptured disc, etc. Most commonly seen in breeds with long backs and short legs such as a dachshund. In between the individual vertebrae there are intervertebral discs made up of an outer fibrous shell (called the annulus fibrosus) and an inner pulpy center (called the Nucleus puposus). These discs stabilize the joints between vertebrae and act as shock absorbers. When a dog has intervertebral disc disease, the outer annulus fibrosus degenerates and eventually the inner nucleus pulposus canpass through the weakened outer annulus. When this happens it puts pressure and the spinal cord and kills nerve tissue which can cause paralysis of the hind limbs..I think the proper term is Chondroid Metaplasia |
Is it degenerative disc disease? |
wow...lots of different thoughts on what this might be. i really have no idea. i hope i get to talk to her again today and i will ask her if she has found out what the vet called it. i hate that he is going through this so young!!! |
OSTEOARTHRITIS - A form of arthritis characterized by chronic degeneration of the cartlidge (cushions) of the joints causing loss of bone density. |
