Does Size Matter?? Hi Ya'll! I haven't posted much, but I sure have learned alot from you. I would like to know how small is TOO small for a grown yorkie? Has anyone noticed significant problems in one under 3lbs? OK..is there a magic number that they should be above to be healthy? I know everydog is different..just wanted to pick your brains!! Thanks. |
The smaller they are the more fragile the are and the more likely they are to get hypoglycemic. More chances of broken legs, getting stepped on, falling, etc. I don't know how may more genetic health problems tiny ones have. Mostly it depends on what type of breeder you bought from. If you bought your puppy from a reputable breeder that knows its lines and does genetic health testing and does not purposely breed for tinies (and a tiny just happened to pop up in a litter) then more than likely your puppy will be healthy - you'll just have to be extra careful with it. However, if you bought from a BYB/puppymill/petstore - someone that purposely breeds for tinies - you have a lot higher chance of having a dog with health issues. There are members on here that have adults that are less than 2lbs full grown that are very healthy, just as there are members with larger yorkies with health problems...so like I said, the chance of health problems more so depends on where you got the puppy and what type of dogs that breeder uses in their lines. |
I don't know what a good weight is, but I like mine a little on the bigger side. |
I'm going to stay away from the whole health issue thing because I tend to get up on my soap box when it comes to health and tiny yorkies. I will say that I have a little one who is 1.5 - 2.0 lbs and I worry about every move she makes. Its like having a butterfly for a pet. One wrong move on my part or her's would kill her. I have to limit guests in my home for fear that they could step on her. The other day I opened the freezer and a hot pocket fell out. I went into a panic because it hit the floor next to her and I knew that even a stupid hot pocket could have killed her. IMHO, anything under 4 lbs is too small and I personally prefer a Yorkie over 5 lbs. |
I have put down a deposit on a pup from a very reputable breeder..I just haven't picked him out yet! I actually bought a pup 2 weeks ago and my grandsons fell in love with him so I gave him to my son and daughter-in law. He will be about 8 lbs so I think he will be perfect for them. I told the breeder that I sorta wanted a male, but I was more interested in personality. He told me today that he has a female that MAY be 3 lbs when grown and she is his favorite. She's 8 wks now and weighs 14 ozs. I haven't been to see them yet 'cause it's a 6 hour round trip! But I'll be going soon! Thanks. |
i have a 4lb little girl who i usually do not worry about in my house. the things i do worry about is jumping off the bed (if she decides not to take the ramp which 99% of the time she uses) or running too fast down the stairs and taking a fall. When we're out I don't like other people picking her up unless they are yorkie owners or have a similar munchkin sized dog. At the dog park i worry that she'll get run over by slightly bigger dogs. I worry when she's around pugs, westies, jack russels, and bostons mostly (they are usually insane at the dog park) health wise i don't worry about her too much because she's pretty sturdy for her size. she's been stepped on, kicked down a few steps and tossed aside, all by accident of course. She's usually good about not being underfoot so i don't worry about dropping things on her or stepping on her now that she's older and learned that she might get kicked. |
I am a little worried about getting a really small one. I wasn't shopping for a tiny, and this gentleman doesn't breed for tiny, he just has a couple of really small ones. Amazing the difference a pound makes! |
size Size does matter to me...I have owned all sizes and prefer not to have one under 3 pounds..4 is better and 5 is great...6 is a bonus. |
I like the 4-5-6 sizes for my self, But I like all sizes. |
