Will my yorkie's kill eachother?
 

I have two yorkie's - Taz who I adopted two and a half years ago who is now 3 and a half years old, and Yankee who is almost two. I bought Yankee one and a half years ago so that Taz would have someone else to play with when I was working. They got along great in the beginning! They were so cute together and my life was pleasant. I would take them to the dog park, they would sleep together, and play tug of war. After a couple of months, before Yankee was even one, I was walking the two of them and we were attacked by a stray Chow. It was the scariest thing I have ever experience, even more so because I thought my dogs were going to die. About two days later they started fighting a lot, but I would be able to break it up and they'd be fine for a few hours and then would start fighting again. To make the long story short, it's been a year since then and my dogs can't even be around each other. This is heartbreaking because I love them both and can't bare to part with either. I don't even know how to chose which one to keep, and I am so worried that they will not go to a good home. Even the thought of getting rid of one makes me want to cry. Our lives are all so upside down because of there fights. My daily routine consists of waking up, taking them out of their separate cages, then I will walk one and my fiance will walk the other. We feed them separately while one is locked in the kitchen and the other is limited to space in the living room. We put them back in the cage when we go to work and repeat the routine when we get home. I have to play with them separately, take them out running separately, doing everything apart. This is no life for them and it makes me feel horrible. It is also a strain in my own life and on my relationship. When will it get better, if ever? I will be trying to have a baby soon, how will I be able to take care of two dogs separately and a baby? Like I said, I can't part with either and I know that is selfish but I wish I could find out if there were other options. I read about yorkie's being this way, and that you have to lock them in a room together and just walk away. My fear is that I will come back and one will have killed the other. Is that possible? If anyone has any advice, please let me know. Thank you for reading.

You don't say if they are male or female or if they've been spayed/neutered.

Two unneutered males will often fight once they become mature.

You might want to get them neutered if there not. I'm getting Penny spayed in hopes that she'll stop fighting with here siblings. She's the littlest one here and you'd think she was ten foot tall and bullet proof.

Yes they are both males and they are not fixed. The vet could not assure me that fixing them would work. I can't afford to get them both fixed and the humane society never called me back about doing it less expensive. Taz would be great for breeding but I tht is one sacrifice that should be made, I know. My vet wants to charge $150 per dog, is that normally what it should cost? Do you think that this could still work or would it be too late? :confused:

Have you tried contacting a Yorkie rescue group on your area? They are full of resources, and my be able to help.

$150 per dog is VERY reasonable for a neuter.

And, if Taz has the personality/aggression issues like you've been talking about, he should, under NO circumstances be bred. Please neuter your dogs, as it may help this problem between them, and it prevents them getting other health problems later in life.

$150.00 it's reasonable. Are there any spay and neuter clinics in your area? sometimes those groups do spay and neuter at a low cost.

I would definately fix both dogs. You should call the Humane Society as I am sure they have special days to do this every month. They do not have enough volunteers to handle all the dogs and the volume of calls they get everyday. You might also see if yours has a website where they will post the information on their spay/neuter clinics and shot clinics.

For their health you need to fix them or they both could get cancer ...so it is a good thing to fix them. Lots of information on the internet about this.

I have had many males come into rescue and all of them were neutered. It does calm them down and I think it helps stop some of these tendencies. I had 2 that would fight from time to time but it was always over a toy. Have you ever noticed what sets them off. Something is going on but you will have to watch them to see.

If you decide to have your vet do it $150 is a reasonable offer. I have seen it at $100 all the way up to $350.

If you want to have any chance at all of keeping them both, they will need to be neutered.

If that doesn't solve the problem, I would consult a trainer. Also watching the Dog Whsiperer on The national Geographic Channel, will help you to understand dog behavior and how you can become the pack leader, oputting them both in a submissive position.

There really is no reason that you all cannot live in harmony once they are both neuterd. Maybe your vet will work with you on the cost.
