People Food! Okay everyone...so dont yell at me. But I have a tendency to "share" w Sky. I mean she just howels and barks and stuff when im trying to eat so I end up giving her some just to shut her up. I know it's so bad. but I dont know what to do? I eat standing up or in bed bc I dont have a table yet...i know so sad. haha. Anyway, I always give her carrots and other veggies but sometimes i find myself giving her my dinner. What do i do so she doesnt bark when there is food around |
The only way to stop that behavior is to not give in. If you want to give her something, put it in HER food dish, not directly off your plate. Our Starr (RIP) was spoiled this way and would bark and jump 3 feet in the air while we were at the dining room table:o We just didn't know any better at that time. With these girls, I refused to have them act this way and forbid anyone from giving them anything at the table. My husband decided to start sharing his evening bowl of cereal with Izzy, in bed, and now whenever he is eating something she begs from him, gets in his face:laugh: She knows better with me, and won't bother me when I eat:laugh: You just have to stay strong and not give in. Make her wait until you are finished and THEN put a tidbit in her bowl. Be careful what you're giving as well, not too much fat, salt, or sugar. |
I set boundries with Chip for the kitchen, he knows that if I am at the kitchen table eating he is not allowed in the kitchen. If I give him some scraps, I put it in his bowl and then give him permission to come in the kitchen. Now to the contrary, if I am watching tv on the couch and eating he will sit and stare at me. No begging, whining, or jumping, just trying to break me down with the "face". |
I put it in her bowl she scarfs it down and then finds me and barks until i throw her some more. I have started keeping a bowl of carrots so when i eat i can throw her some little carrot peices to occupy her. but if im slow she will bark! it's so awful! |
I used to feed my monkey from my plate too. But she kept getting worse and worse and really making dinner impossible. What we did was just stop cold turkey! At the same time that we sit down for dinner I put down her doggy bowl with some dry canidae and a little bit of meat or veggie on top. In the beginning she just ate the human food and came to us to get more but I would say "thats it" every time and then we ignored her. YES, she barked her little head off for the first few weeks....but now it paid off. She has not stopped 100% and still does the stare down with the puppy face but the barking has improved significantly. You just have to commit to it and stay strong cuz it took us months! Try Ikea for a kitchen table...I moved this summer and thats where all our furniture is from. |

Maya was spoiled as an only dog, then when we got Cali I would occassionally give them a little tidbit from my meal. Then I got Pixie and having 3 begging and barking was horrible, not to mention occassional upset tummies. SO I quit cold turkey told my husband and dtr no people food and at first they would beg and bark, then they went to whining, now after never breaking down they all 3 sit quietly by us when we are eating. |
We eat boring food all the time like grilled chicken & rice. They always get some of that - AFTER we are done and on the floor, or they have to do tricks for it. My husband always laughs at me because when I'm full I start cutting up the rest of my meal in little pieces. They love green beans, rice, cheese, apples, bananas, carrots, potatoes... lots of good stuff. The only bad thing my husband gives them is a french fry if we go through a drive through and they are in their car seats. If he doesn't share, Sammy barks until she gets a fry. Yes, she has him very well trained. By the way, if you never feed them from the table they will never learn to beg. If they already beg, you can just teach them to go to their "spot" like a rug and if they wait patiently they will get some when you are done. |
