Deer Hunt!!! WHA WHA!!!!! So the opening weekend of the deer hunt is next weekend!!!! I dont know about the rest of ya'll but we were taken out of school early to get an early start on the hunt and my family was the first ones on the mountain as soon as that sun came up. It was like Christmas but BETTER!!!!! So anyways the time has come and while I am really excited to go I have some concerns I thought I would ask my fellow yorkie mamas. I dont have any orange for them to wear and I have looked everywhere! So I was wondering if anyone had any brilliant ideas for orange (keep in mind I do not knit). I was really concerned because my family is alittle white trash and if they dont find a deer by about 12:30 they get bored and just start shooting "little things" (dont get me started the little bas*****) . So anyways you get the idea.. I was also worried about how cold it gets. Utah may be a dessert but its COLD!!! So I also wanted some ideas on how to keep them warm. Any and all help will be greatly appreciate!! Thanks so much!:) |
Petco has some bright orange halloween shirts right now, or you could go to a hunting store and I'm sure they'd have something |
honestly i wouldnt take a my baby hunting with me when there's people around who shoot "little things". doesnt seem very safe. |

May I ask why you would want to take a yorkie in the woods in the first place? They surely can't run the deer, so what the purpose of taking them? |
I would not take your baby in the woods with you, My hubby also hunts, but there are some crazy people out there. some hunters shot my 13 year old doberman, just for the he77 of it years ago. Your baby would be safer at home. |
If possible leave them at home, because eventually people start drinking while hunting and may accidentally injure them or worse. Worst case scenario if you do bring them is to keep them inside the cabin, or wherever you stay while there. When they go potty outside, keep them leashed and in plain sight. As for visibility, get some orange or brightly colored fleece and do a make shift cape over their regular winter wear. |
I see no reason in taking your yorkies hunting with you...There are no benefits to taking them, and a lot of risks. |

Also, keep in mind that shooting "little things" out of season is illegal. :) |
Hi, I'm new to the boards and haven't been brave enough to jump in, but after reading your post I just had to add my 2 cents... My husband grew up hunting and while I am seriously against it I did learn about the sport and I understand that many people do not share my personal beliefs. Having a dog with you deer hunting is about as useful as bringing an elephant dressed in a neon ballerina tutu. Bringing active toy breeds with you is downright irresponsible. Hunter Orange on a toy dog that gets away from you to chase a rodent is not going to protect them from over zealous trigger happy morons. They just won't be seen. If you hunt from a blind, expecting them to sit quietly and not move for hours is futile, it won't happen. If you are serious about the sport you know that they will be more of a distraction, as your primary focus has to be on them. I'm assuming that since you are asking this question they haven't been field trained or off-leash trained at all. You are not only putting your dogs at risk, you are putting yourself at risk as well. Just imagine yourself chasing your tiny dog through the woods knowing that people could mistake YOU for a deer - even if you were glowing head to toe in hunter orange. Leave them at home where they are safe and you can concentrate on your sport in the safest way possible. Just an opinion from a newbie. |

Such an informed reply with experience from a new-newbie! I look forward to more posts from you. I have to agree - it sounds like a recipe for disaster. |
I can't think of a reason you'd take your baby with you either. I think it's a good time for them to stay at home. |
I don't see a reason for you to bring your pups with you. It's just a horrible combination with people who like to shoot "little things" and little dogs. and also, yorkies were originally bred to chase and kill rodents, that instinct is still in them. it's SO easy for them to get away in a split second. Just...dont' do it. I think hunting is a sad thing anyway. but to each their own, I suppose. |

I would also add would you take a 2 year old skin baby out in the woods during this time? I believe our furbabies deserve the same consideration. |

Please don't be shy about jumpin in. The first one's the hardest, I promise. And, that's behind you now! :D |
I may have put this the wrong way. I dont hunt, only the boys in our family do. The girls and kids stay at the camp all day long while the men go hunting in the woods. I wouldn't be taking them out into the woods, they would be on a lease at the campsite the whole weekend, and also to add I am LDS(morman) which means I DONT DRINK, do drugs, or get involved with anything that would impair my judgement (same goes for my family). I didnt mean to post this to get others opinions about hunting, I just wanted to know what I could do to keep my babies safe. I may have just needed to expand alittle more to help everyone understand. But thanks for the help. |
I hope you didn't think I was talking about you with the drinking but the other hunters who do drink. If you staying back at camp I would still make sure your furbabies are dressed in orange and never, never let them get off leash. They would have a field day running through the woods. |

PS - My family and I are LDS too. :) |

I have seen some cute hunters orange and camo things at PetEdge.com We live way out in the woods and when deer season starts, it kind of sucks (sorry, lack of a better word there) because when we want to walk, on our own land on our own hiking trail, we have to wear orange just because you do not know who is out there and which why they are shooting. So, Mojo has this kind of stuff...not that he really needed it (because he is never running free from us and we have it one), but just because it is cute! I think people were shocked by your first post...I know I was.....the getting bored and shooting little things....YIKES!!! We don't deer hunt, but I know lots who do and it is just like fishing to some. WE are all different and have different hobbies, but the people I know will camp and they won't shot unless they see what they are shooting at and it is the correct size. They also, do not shot for the thrill of it....they actually eat the deer (give the bones, hooves, etc) to their dogs, etc. BUT I couldn't do it...YUCK!!! Sitting at the camp, I think it would be good for the little one to have orange on...even though I am sure he would be next to you the whole time. I wouldn't let him wonder far from camp just because of snakes and ticks and such! Have fun camping! |
Won't he be terrified by the shots, even in the camp? Maybe he would feel safer at home |
What about taking some of that hunter orange tape that they use to mark the woods ... it's kind of vinyl... tie it on their harness...like a flag? deb |

Oops, just saw the updated post clearing things up; but yeah, even at camp, don't let those darling yorkies our of your sight for a minute. |
