Show breeders I just had a question, I know that we have been discussing BYB, Hobby breeders and Show Breeders in the "Rant" forum:mad: . What I wanted to know is how do you become a Show breeder???  Do you just read the books, speak with other breeders. How do actually start, you purchase a pup from another breeder that is "show quality" and compete??? If you have a winner you go on and breed your winners together. I just wanted to know where you guys get your expertise, I imagine you only obtain it with years of experience...right? By the way, I am in no way trying to stir things up or offend anyone I just would really like to know. I as a dog lover, and Yorkie enthusiast, would imagine showing would be a very rewarding experience. Maybe something to think about in the future. |

Are you asking the show breeders hoe they got their foot in the door so to say? If so it is a good question to ask if you are interested in how others actually got into showing, you have to start somewhere right? |

I imagine they go to a lot of shows, read tons of stuff, and also some have professional handlers once their career takes off. |

I hung around shows, asked questions, went to show after show and learned what I was looking at in a good YOrkie. Once other show breeders knew I was serious about showing and not in it to just breed and sell puppies with their champion lines, they began to trust me. I signed their contracts in buying a dog from them, signed contracts for stud services and 12 years later have never gone back on that contract even if it was not in writing but a verbal understanding. The first breeder I went to for a stud service on my bitch, turned me down flat. I wrote a letter stating exactly what I was doing and why I wanted to use her male, what my hopes were and how I could improve my line I was starting. That showed that I had learned something. Also by always showing up at shows, my face became known. When I started out, my purpose was to want to breed a nice show puppy and show it to its championship. In over 12 years now of being in YOrkies, that is still my purpose for breeding, a nice show dog for me to show myself. Of course, the best planned breedings don't always work out that way and anything deemed pet quality is sold for pet spay/neuter. Even well after I was established, I waited 2 years to buy a nice show dog from a well known reputable breeder. There is no overnight success or getting in right away with a nice show dog. Too many things have gone wrong for show breeders that trusted the wrong people so now it is even more difficult. If you are sincere and can convince a show breeder you are sincere, they will help you. |

showing I hung around dog shows until Yorkie people got sick of my face...they began to trust me and a few sold me a some quality bitches, who were in turn breed to their quality champions...and that is how I produced my first champion, bred by me, myself and I...LOL |

..maybe also to get a feel for what breeders do just take the babydoll that you have (the one in the av is a cutie!) and take a conformation class....you'll have fun, get in some socialization and then learn as you go.......... |
