Does any one cook for there dog if so can you tell me what and how much a day also at what times like the 3 meals and some snacks . please thanx for all your kelp. |
I do home prepare Ruby's food and use the recipes and feeding guidlines in Dr. Pitcairn's book. If you are going to home prepare meals, I would suggest you get a copy of his book. I use his basic recipes and will use different meats, veggies, etc. to give Ruby some variety. Cheerios don't have to be cooked. Ruby doesn't eat carrots without them being mixed in with her food, so I do cook and finely chop them. |
max just does not want to eat anything at all i need to forse feed him soft food it the low protine medacal |
You might want to check with your vet. |

Veggies, Brown Rice, Pasta, Sweet Potatoes, Cereals, Fresh Fruit, Dried Fruit This are things that you can feed him. YOU MUST BE VERY CAREFUL WITH PROTEINS In a very, very small amount you can feed eggs, cottage cheese and yogurt He does need to have a limit amount of protein b/c he does need protein for muscle growth - but with any type of Liver Disease you must be very careful. He also needs supplements. I know this is very fustrating, but you babies life is at risk. I would suggest consulting with a Dog Nutritionist - They can guide you to make homemade food for him and they have the knowledge to give you regarding foods and amounts for liver compromised dogs. If you are serious about it, let me know and I will look for someone for you to contact. |
BabyMax, please take TLC's advice and be VERY CAREFUL what you feed. Max should be eating 3-4 times a day in smaller amounts (4 times a day is best). How long has he not been eating? If he won't eat the canned dog food that you have, he probably won't eat much of anything else. Maybe you should talk to your vet. Have you tried giving him a couple little chunks of cooked, skinless sweet potato? How about cooked green beans? Watermelon? You can contact a nutritionist to have them create a recipe for Max. You can also do Dr. Dodds Diet in the FILES section of the yahoo liver shunt group. If you do Dr. Dodds Diet, the recipe will have to be tailored to meet Max's needs. That includes considerably reducing the amound of fish or replacing it with egg. |
TLC and Ellie May, that was excellent advice. Babymax, I don't want to scare you, but food is such an important part of controlling your dog's condition. Seriously, certain foods and certain amounts could kill your dog. Your dog's liver is in such bad shape right now, I hate to see it become damaged any worse. The only way I would feed any egg is if you mix it with a rice and veggies and I don't recommend giving a whole egg. Your dog is showing too many HE symptoms and his liver is too damaged to give him too much protein at this time. You need to stabilize him first. If the ingredients I found of the Medical low protein are right, he should not be on this food. It contains both chicken and salmon which are too high in purines for a dog having this many problems. You really need to ask your vet to switch you to Royal Canin Hepatic Formula. It's specifically for dogs that have the same condition that your dog has. Your dog needs to be on a vegetarian food. I will say a prayer for him. Look for Dr. Dodds recipe on the liver shunt site, but don't use it with all the cod that it says. It's too much and your dog actually probably shouldn't be eating cod. Like I said, I would use egg instead. How much does your Max weigh? I just want to let you know that I am not a vet, and I'm speaking only from personal experience and my experience with other dogs with liver conditions... |
