My yorkie makes funny snorts..... When he drinks water or plays hard he has these snorting sessions and seems to have difficulties breathing until it stops. Othewise he is very happy and active and healthy (I hope), bright eyed and bushy tailed. Can anyone enlighten me to what this is. |
I'm not sure what it could be. Do you think he's drinking to fast, and not getting enough air? |
reverse sneezing? collapsed tracchea? or he could just snort! :) My mom has a shih tzu who has snorting sessions like that but I guess its common in snub nosed dogs... yorkies are not snub nosed though. If you are a little concerned give your vet a call and ask. My dogs snort a LOT.. but they do not sound in distress, almost like they are sneezing and snorting at each other when they play or want my attention. :D |
I wouldn't worry about it. My Mindy does that too and so did my Pomeranian. I think they get water up there nose and then are trying to get it out or having trouble breathing through the nose. Some say it could be reverse sneezing. All I know is that if I call her name she will stop. Which makes me think they are in control when it is happening. Kinda freaky at first. |
I was reading in my Yorkie book that it is called "snorkeling" or "reverse sneezing" like some of you mentioned. My two maltese do that quite often, but not Delilah yet. It says it is not anything to worry about, but it mimics collapsed trachea sometimes. If nothing ever happens after a spell, I would say you have a "snorkel baby" too! :) |
I was wondering about this also! Chip does this right when we leave the house in the colder months, we would step off the driveway and no fail he would start snorting. He also does this when he sticks his face way into something too, which probably means he got something up his nose. |
Thanks for all of your replies I thought I would inquire here before I ran off to the vet, and got myself another large bill.:D |
My boy Valentino does this, especially when he drinks water way too fast. It is called reverse sneezing and he just stands there and snorts. I have learned that you actually have to hold his little nose shut so he begins breathing properly again. It isn't a big deal, just an issue of not snorting air and just relaxing. :) |
Does it resemble a honking noise? If so, it could be a collapsed trachea and that is something that really should not be ignored. It is a very serious problem and he should be seen by a vet. One of my yorkies developed a collapsed trachea after his neuter surgery and has to be on medication and will probably eventually require surgery. |
