LOL..yeah, they must be distant cousins or something! I cant stand it mainly because sometimes its quiet...Im watching a good program on tv or Im talking on the phone then all of a sudden its bark, bark, screech, bark, bark LOL. It actually startles me because he is so intense with it! Its never a build up...you know growl, growl, one bark...nah, its full force!! I have a small place with hardwood floors and the sound just bounces around like crazy!!:p That is so funny how Tatum looks at him...she's probably like "um Steddy, seriously what is the problem dude" LOL:D |
Do you think it's cruel I have the same probably with my yorkies when walking. They go crazy barking when they see another dog. My Chihuahua and Jack Russell (both females and a little older) are usually quiet but sometimes the boys even get them barking. It is so embarrasing when walking them into the doggie park with all of them barking their little heads off. They shut right up once we are in the fenced in area of the doggie park and they are off leash. Anyway, I decided to take the squirt bottle with me for our walk last night. One of my yorkies is terrified of it and will leave the room if I even set the bottle out. Sure enough we walked half a block and a dog was walking across the street and the boys started barking and pulling. I gave them both a squirt and they shut up but after that little Diesel was afraid to get anywhere near me. It totally ruined the walk for him. I practically had to drag him for the rest of the walk. So do you think this is to cruel to use for them. I want them to stop barking but I don't want Diesel to develop a complex or something. Any advice appreciated. |
Take the water with you on a walk, when he starts barking spray away!! The thing is, with my dogs... when they are mid-frenzy like that, they dont hear my voice at all. But the water gets them immediately. You cannot do the water when they have calmed down though. So my suggestion is walk with his leash in one hand and don't give him a lot of slack so it keeps him side by side with you, and a water bottle in the other hand, when he goes mental squirt him immediately and say "NO BARKING" very sternly. keep this up, it will work... my boys can be very unruly and my condo has sent me a warning letter twice for their barking. Since Ive started with the spray bottle a couple months ago, the change in them is awesome!!! They still bark but they don't go into that frenzied state anymore! That was awful! |
i'm going to have to agree with a previous post and say the cesar milan approach to making your dog obedient is a good one. I tried that with Bruin and Nico and they are very very calm in stressful situations |
I put on a belt and loop the leash to my belt so that they can't feel any tension being passed down through it. If one of the dogs starts barking at another dog on the walk I go AHH AHHH and keep walking right past them... they don't get any validation for the "fit". It usually passes much more quickly this way than if I pick them up. |
Wow... I would be a lil frustrated as well... Ive never used em' or know anyone that has... But arent there "bark collars" or something similar they sell at Petsmart or something... To control/prevent the barking?!? Not sure, but that might be a last resort for ya - Hope this helps... |

But it sounds like pretty solid advice. |
Thank you all for the great suggestions. :) I took him for a walk yesterday and took your advice about making sure he walks with me and it worked. For the most part he will walk along side of me but sometimes he doesnt. But not giving him a lot of slack on the leash helped tremendously. I havent had a chance to get a bark collar but in the meantime, I've been holding him down when he barked in the window and he calmed down. Im going to try the spray bottle again. I used it before but not on walks. So far so good! |
