Breeding question? Hello, I've been breeding for about 2 years now, and a family that I sold my pups to was mentioning about in breeding. What is that? She said that its when you let the dad and daughter breed? Are you allowed to do that? I thought that was wrong? can someone help clarify for me? Thanks Linh |
Maybe YorkieRose or Whisper can help you with this one. I know that it is a practice that is done probably more than we realize. I for one don't want to touch this subject since I've never done it and don't know if I ever would. Have you done a search on the internet? |
Line breeding is something that is done in order to lock in a particular trait in a particular blood line. It is usually done with at least 1 generation apart. Inbreeding is where you take a brother and a sister on the same level of the family tree and you breed them together. I don't recall anywhere where this is useful at all in improving the breed, but I could be wrong. (My knowledge comes from chinchilla breeding...I believe it to be the same in all species.) |
That is called linebreeding. From what I read alot of breeder do this to improve the breed. But if you don't know what your doing it is more harm than good. You can breed mother and son or father and daughter but not brother and sister from the same litter.I am not an expert but this is what I learned here so far. I'm sure our experienced breeder her can fill in the fine details. You can ask Yorkierose or Whispersmom,I've learned alot from them and I'm sure they can give you their wisdom in this one. |
inbreeding Inbreeding is not for novices...linebreeding is my preference and you know I have been around the dog kennel a "few" years ! LOL The best way to find any genetic faults and fatal genetic problems is to inbreed. Brother/sister breedings, even half bro/sis is never necessaryIMO to produce quality dogs. There are plenty of fine lines for a novice to bred with, why take chances that can produce serious genetic problems, you can get those with outcrossing and linebreeding..don't ask for them. Anyone who encourages you to inbreed a healthy line, does not have the potential litters best interests at heart...theyare asking you to take a chance on ruining a good thing. When you learn what you are doing genetically, then a granddaughter, grandfather is a goog combination at times..if a litter is an OUTCROSS, then going back heavy into one of the lines is good, father/daughter is possible...but since you asked the question.."what is inbreeding", you are years away from attempting it. JMO A responsible breeder must accept the good with the bad. It can mean a litter of genetically defective pups you must care for the rest of their lifes..you did it, you fix it! You cannot sell them off to some poor unsuspecting buyer and wash your hand of it...plus, not all genetic problems show up in the early pup ages. Best wishes |
