Too Small My baby girl is 6 months and weighs 2.8 pounds. I wanted to breed her, but I think she might be on the too little side. What is a safe weight for breeding, and what might be the growth be from here on out? If she is too small I will opt to get her fixed. |
I would say she is too small. |
there are a lot of very knowlegable breeders on here...i'm sure someone will be able to help you out!! i personally think she is going to be too small....but everyone has their thoughts on it. good luck!!!!! sounds like you will have a wonderful "pet" to enjoy for a very long time :) |
from what I have heard that is waaay to small. I think a lot of breeders wont breed a female unless they are five pounds. But again I'm not a breeder. So hopefully some will chime in:) |
Well at only 6 months, she is definately not done growing, but it is doubtful that she will grow enough for breeding to be safe. Only time will tell though.:) |
At 6 months, she's probably not going to get too much bigger - maybe up to 3.5lbs. I think anything under 4lbs is too small to breed, and 5lbs is more ideal. There is just too big of a risk of her needing a c-section or having complications during birth. If she were my baby, I'd definitely have her spayed for her safety. |
Not a breeder either but I heard nothing smaller than 5 lbs for the female. I don't know if your dog will get any bigger or not. Teddi only gained 2 oz from the time she was about 6 mos until now and she turned 1 on saturday. |
Yep, from all I've read, a Yorkie under 5lbs should NOT be bred. Too small making chances for complications much greater. |
I would suggest a safe weight for breeding would be between5-6 pounds! Good lock. My little male was supposed to be 3-4lbs,he had a growth@ weight spurt at 5 months fom 4lbs10oz to the 6 ponds he is now at 61/2 months! Good luck! At least you have a little lady for loving and a lovely companion. |
She may be too small. I am not an expert at all. My vet was talking to me about breading Roxy. He has 3 yorkies and pic's of them and his daughters around the office. He said it would be fun for her to have some pup's. The person he uesed to breed his yorkie is the person he wants to breed Roxy with next year. He said the male must be smaller and this male is 2.5 lbs and Roxy is about 4lbs. He said he would feel very safe about this since she wouldnt have to have a c-section. Talk to your vet. |
Also, size isn't the only factor. You need to know the lines your dog came from and if there is a history of the females being free-welpers or if any have needed c-sections. |

I agree!! Daisy is 4 1/2 lbs but comes from a long line of free whelpers. Every litter she has had, has been delivered very quickly and with no help. |

I know that there are breeders both ethical and unethical that will breed a female under 4 lbs if they are sure of their lines etc and figure only time will tell if it was a good choice. But I do think that most ethical breeders that are breeding for the standard would rather not breed such a small girl. I know a breeder that recently bred her 4lb female and she did free whelp but she only had two pups and one died after birth and the other a week or so later. I wondered if it was due to the female's size and it being her first litter that she delivered early and had those issues with her pups. |
