I'm a mess... my poor little Trigger
 

My baby got his cast off today, and it is horrible. HE has nasty blisters all over his stick thin leg, and he still isn't attempting to walk on it. He is getting around fine, he just won't put weight on it. Also, from the elbow(not exactly sure what else to call it) down on his leg is just limp. I don't know how else to explain it. But it's horrid. the vet says he may or may not ever bend it properly due to the ligaments that were torn. But, he says he needs the cast off to try & start building muscle in that leg again. I have been tearing up every time he hobbles across the house.

PLease someone, I need some encouragement. Is this normal?

Maybe try a doggy physical threapy with him? Talk to your vet, but maybe putting him in the bath tub and fill it up so he can walk around or swim with assistance? Just a thought. My thoughts and heart go out to ya. Keep us updated.

He needs to build his muscles back into shape.Try letting him swim in water -bathtub or if you have a kids pool.Sending prayers and kisses to Trigger.

I agree, swimming should work quite well. Perhaph you could massage it too. Give him lots of luvies from me.

I hope his prognosis is good, and that he's better in not time. Prayers coming your way.

I'm sure he'll start using his leg more as time goes on. :thumbup: I think the swimming idea is a great one. He's sure to use his leg, plus it's great exercise. ;)

I think it's very normal he's not using it right now, remember he hasn't in a while, so he probably just feels weird. Don't worry, he'll be fine and back to normal in no time. Smile-- he wants to see you happy. :)

Time heels all wounds right? Just love him, lots of TLC and Im sure in time he'll be back to normal :)

Its just like if it happened to a human, he won't want to put much pressure on it because of the pain. Heck its been in the same position for while, it must be stiff and uncomfortable. I'm with everyone else and doing aquatic therapy, less impact but more resistance.

I'm sure his little leg will show great improvement in a few weeks. The aquatic exercise is the best; also treating him like he is better and not crippled will encourage him to think that way too. These little guys are very strong minded. I have you in my prayers, just hang in there.:)

hey sweetie...i'm sorry you are so upset. it is so sad when they aren't how we think they should be after an injury. maggie got her cast off a couple of weeks ago and is just now starting to use it all the time. for the first week, she would not use the leg AT ALL. she let it hang all the time. the second week, she used it more, but not much. now she is pretty much using it all the time. she will pick it up occasionally.

i am sure he will be fine...give it some time. if he isn't using it more in the next week to 10 days, definitely go back to the vet. if you feel like something might still be wrong, take him to another vet for a second opinion.

oh, and as for the sores, maggie had those too. she had a cast for 8 weeks so we had a lot of sores to doctor. it is normal, from what people tell me. just keep some neosporin on it. it will not hurt him if he licks it...but if you are concerned, put some neosporin on it and then put that cast cover i made for you back over it. you dont really need to do that, but if it helps, then go for it. the sore will heal really quick..i was shocked at how fast maggies healed!!!
