Worried about anesthesia....help
 

Hi all, I hope I am posting this in the correct forum. I am new and worried about my baby girl, Delilah. She is 7 months old and last time I weighed her she was 2 lbs. Anyway, she has the common problem of retaining her baby teeth and needs to have them removed. The vet suggested we spay her at the same time. I feel very good about my choice of Vets as he talked in detail about how he would take every precaution due to her size. He will be using the Iso type of anesthesia. I guess what I am looking for here is maybe someone that has a small baby that went through this and came out fine.....I will be a nervous wreck until it is all over! The vet did say he would do complete blood work, ekg, etc. so I assume if he does not feel she is capable of handling the surgery he will postpone it. Advice?

Layla was 2 lbs as well when she was spayed. She went in in the morning and i got to bring her home around 6 the same night, although i know not all vets do this. She was FINE! they did the bloodwork there that morning before her spay and if it had come out not ok they would have called me to come get her and we would have tried again. Sadly her adult teeth had not come in so we had to go back again about 3 months later and have her put under again.. so be glad that you can have it both done at once!!!

You will never know how much your response eased my mind....not to say I still will not worry but that is to be expected. But at least now I know that there is someone out there with a tiny baby girl that came through. Thanks again.....and I hope to come back here tomorrow night and tell you how well my baby girl did! I pray!!!

My Gizmo is six lbs. and he just had five baby teeth removed and his neuter at the same time and he's fine now. He whimpered some the first night home, but he was well on the road to recovery the next day. I was worried too, it's normal to worry about our little ones. :)

oh my goodness it is tomorrow!!! i will be thinking of you two!! keep in mind if you do get to take her home she might not come with meds (Layla did not... but some do) so she will be sore and VERY VERY Groggy... so don't worry about that... Layla needed help to stand to pee... and i bought her a baby onesie (the type that infants wear) to put on her to keep her from getting at her stiches.. becayse i didn't want her to have to wear that stupid cone.... she also didn't want to eat so you might think about giving her yogurt or apple sauce or something liek that that she can lick up... also try and check on her overnight just to make sure she is ok and check that she hasn't peed herself.. because it will be hard for her to get up and tell you she has to go.... good luck and PM me if you have any questions or write them on here!

I dont have China anymore but the new owner took her in to be spayed at about 9 months I think and she only weighs 3 lbs and everything went fine. Good luck with your little girl. I hope all goes well.

If it's tomorrow, did the vet tell you anything about no food or water after midnight or anything? Gizmo had those instructions.

I have serched the net for everything I could find in hopes to calm my nerves. Sometimes talking to real live people that have been through the same things is all it takes! I would like to ask one more thing. My baby girl gave me the scare of my life when I first got her. She was 4 months old and the breeder was a very nice lady that had her on a very good dog food. (don't know if it is allowed to name brands) Anyway, she would not eat when I got her home and I just figured the new surroundings had her upset. The next morning she was in a coma and I rushed to the vet and thankfully she was just fine after getting the shot. She was fine, I was a wreck! So, I made the mistake of giving her the only thing she will eat without fail....cheese! I know this is bad but she has trained me....little stinker. I have bought every kind of dog food (organic, breed specific, even the cheaper brands) and she MAY try it for a day or two and then looks at me with them little brown eyes as if she is asking "what else you got?" I have even cooked for her.....liver, chicken, chicken and rice...I am at my wits end! I figure after we jump this surgery hurdle it will be time to try to correct her diet. And do any of you know of really small toothbrushes for our tiny babies?
The ones they sell in the kits are just not small enough.

go to the grocery store or drug store and get the small ones they sell for kids!

My friend had a two pounder that she had spayed, and teeth removed, and she was up and about the very next day.
