How do I stop this????? Autumn is very much attached to me and if I go out the front door for any reason she tries to run out behind me or as I am about to open the door she will lean on it so she will actually fall out and then be out w/me. But I am so afraid (she is a runner) that she will run in the street and you know what could happen. I have tried to pick her up as I am going out the door and then stick her back in but she always tries to nip me because she does not want to be left in the house. I can not always hold her and at times I have something in my hand that I have to take outside. I would love to get her to just wait any tips! Thanks a bunch!:animal-pa |
Teddy does this very thing. It has gotten to the point where I put him in his room and THEN leave. He did the whole biting thing as well, but at this point, after many times, he now goes into his room without so much of a peep or bite. Hang in there! I still have issues with him. If I leave, even for 5 minutues, he has to be put in a room, and my grandmother will let him out after I'm gone. Then he spends the rest of the time, sitting by the door awaiting my return. It's frustrating at times, but just think, your baby loves you so much that she never wants you to go. Separation anxiety at its worst, I'm afraid. |
Do you have a room where you can keep her when you leave? Ours likes to sleep on our bed, and we put a baby gate across the doorway so she feels as if the door is open, but she can't get out. She doesn't mind if we leave her now.;) |

Puppy class taught us to use treats at the door and teach them to wait ... open the door and use the treat to have her sit and wait . When she learms this command then she will listen to you when you use the word "wait " as the door opens. I have two and they pretty much know "wait " and do not try to get out. My previous yorkie would run every time the door opened . Too dangerous to not teach them properly. Good luck Autumn. |
this problem is on Caesar all the time. he puts them in a sit or lay down about 10 feet from the door and makes them stay. if they move, he walks back over to the and puts them in position again. This is done until they stay there and you can walk in and out of the door freely. to get their attention if they start to move he either snaps his finger or uses the 'shhht' noise. it takes persistence, so practice this when you have time and not when your running out the door. |
My Otis is a runner, too. He makes it virtually impossible for me to go out the front door. In my case, it's not that he doesn't want me to leave, it's that he wants to go out and explore!! Here are a few things that have helped me......... I keep a broom by the front door. If he still persists, I pick it up and hold it in front of him. I would never touch him with it, but just holding it in front of him makes him back off. Also, If I know people are going to be coming in and out of the front door, I'll put 2 panels of an ex-pen in front of the door and have people step over it. It seems his terrier nature takes over when I try to leave out of the front door. I'm not sure any amt of training would stop his drive to get outside. Good Luck, I hope you get some helpful advice!! |
You really need to teach the stay command. Maybe some puppy classe would help. |

I have a small hallway to my front door so I leave a baby gate up all the time and guests just have to learn to step over the gate. You could also try the xpen panels around the door if you have an open type doorway. |
If is separation anxiety is very hard to control, some people use a xpen panels in front of the door so the dog won't come out or what I do I put the girl in the playpen while I bring the pkg in the house, hope I could help you more:( |
Cody does the same... He has dashed out the door on occassions.. and i have to chase him. and im so afraid he is gonna get run over. i was gonna take him with me today to my dr appt. him and mom were gonna sit outside and wait on me. just a 5 min pick up meds and leave visit. and then we were going to petsmart... but he dashed out the door and this woman was fixing to back up i was screaming i thought she wouldnt see him and he would get ran over. luckily she saw him. and i finally got him back in the house. he went in his pen and didnt get to go for a ride. but i did buy him a halloween shirt that says trick or treat from petsmart. ill take pics tomorrow. they are soooo fast when they have freedom! lol |
