Fleas :( Ugh, I saw a flea on one of my furbabies today and I am soooo grossed out by it and I feel so bad for them. We have flea medication to put on them tonight after their baths, but I had a few questions. I have multiple dogs and they are all getting the treatment, so do I need to keep them separate for a few hours so they dont play with each other and eat the flea medicine off of each other?? :( Thanks guys.. |
I heard that you can bathe them in Dawn dishwashing liquid and that will kill the fleas instantly. Then you can put the medication on them and they should all be OK to play with each other. |
which flea medication are you using? if its frontline then you cannot put it on right after a bath. You need to wait two days. My advice would be to bath them with dawn dish soap for now and then apply the frontline in 2 days, OR apply the frontline without bathing them. It will still kill the fleas. Topical flea medications need the oils in teh skin to absorb properly. |
Yes read the box, because a lot of them say not to put them on after a bath. |
Oh no, I hope that I can put it on after a bath. It's Advantage I think... going to read it now. |
Okay I read the paperwork they gave me and looked up their website online and didn't see anything about not bathing them. Has anyone used Advantage before? |

Also Zodiac flea shampoo for puppies works great and they smell good. |
Thanks for the advice. I wish I would have known sooner because I just bought 50.00 worth of it, so I have to use it this time :( . I hope it works... |
I used Frontline for years, but for some reason this year it didn't work and we had a problem with fleas. I got Advantage for the cats and K9 Advantix for Lady. My experience with Advantage is that it works until their first bath. K9 Advantix is waterproof. I'd start with a bath in Dawn. Dilute it 50% with water, then put it on a dry dog. Leave the lather on for about 5 minutes, then rinse. You'll want to use a good conditioner afterwards because it is drying. Stay away from the over the counter flea products, shampoos, etc. They can be very dangerous. If you blow dry, you can apply Advantage in a few hours, once they are completely dry. Make sure to wash all the bedding and vacuum frequently to suck up any eggs that may be in your carpet. Dispose of the bag or empty the cup so they can't hatch and climb out. I hope this works. I had to also get some carpet powder to get a handle on the fleas this year. |
Thanks everyone for the help. I put the Advantage on all of them after a bath, as I didn't see anything in the usage guide on not bathing them. My only real question now is how long to keep them seperated from each other? I didn't know if during play they could ingest the medication that I had to put on their shoulder blades. It's been about 3 hours they've been kept separately. I'm lucky that I've only seen 4-5 fleas out of my 4 dogs. I have hardwoods so I vaccumed and moped, dumped the vaccum canister in a ziplock and threw it away outside, then bleached the canister. I vaccummed the couch, washed all their bedding and plush toys... so I'm hoping this does the trick. What a day! |
