What questions to ask vet re spaying? So I think I'm going to finally going to schedule Britney's spay after thinking about it and discussing it here. What kind of questions should I ask the vet? Should I get blood work done? The vet doesn't suggest it unless the dog is over 6 and/or ill. How far in advance should the blood work be done prior to spaying? I know this might sound really dumb- but is there I better day of the week than others to have the surgery done? Anything else? |
One question to ask is what kind of anesthesia they use. Isoflorine (or something like that) is the good one.. But, that's all I got :) |
Don't know of any good questions, but I'm sending prayers her way. |
I think the best day to do a spay is when you have time off after. These are the questions I would ask: What kind of anesthesia do you use (should be Isoflourine or Sevoflourine)? If you give the dog a sedative or short-acting anesthesia to intubate what kind do you use (should not be a barbituate)? What size tube do you use to intubate small dogs (should be the smallest possible)? Does a vet intubate or is it a tech? How do you monitor animals when they are under anesthesia (they should monitor with a pulsoximeter)? Do they heat the surgery table/use heating pads (you don't want your baby losing body heat)? Do they send you home with pain meds (in my mind it is a must)? Do they send you home with antibiotics (also a must)? Do they keep your dog overnight (if they do there should be someone there with her the WHOLE time)? Do they use IV catheters (they should)? You have to go with what you are comfortable with. Some people might be okay with a tech doing the intubation, so it's best to talk to your vet. Yes, I would do bloodwork. There is no way around it for me. I hope this helps you. |

I wrongly thought that the vet himself would administer it. |
Thanks guys so much! |
Even though the dog is under 6, I would go ahead and get the blood work done. Like others mentioned, make sure that they use gas anesthetics(Isoflourane or Sevoflourane), not injectable anesthetics. |

I called again today to make an appointment and the lady that answered the phone was very friendly and said she recommended blood work. She said I should get in and do it as soon as possible before she comes into heat. We have an appointment for an exam and blood work in two hours and I have been a wreck all day. |
Good luck!! Try not to worry too much :) |
