Dew Claws I am a novice potential owner and need some advice. I am preparing to send a deposit for a puppy and found out that the breeder does not remove the dew claws because yorkies are such a small breed. Is this normal? And if the breeder doesn't remove the dew claws, can the vet do so once the puppy comes home with me? So far, I am VERY happy with this breeder. Thanks! |
There is no need to remove the dew claws IMO, all of my yorkies have them. They use them for balance, to help to stop quickly when they are running and also to help to grip things, kind of like a thumb. Enjoy the fact that your baby will have his/her dew claws :) |
Ellie has dew claws. She does fine with them.:) |
I personally don't think it's a problem if the dew claws are left in tack. You just need to trim them when you trim the rest of the nails. |
dew claws need to be removed. the reason they are removed is b/c there is such a curve in the nail that it gets caught on items and the puppy can pull the nail out causing excessive bleeding. the vet can remove it but b/c the puppy will be older, they would have to be put to sleep in order to have them removed. most puppies have them removed from 3days to 5 days old. so yes, they should be removed. |
I appreciate the quick (and varied) replies! I was so nervous that dew claw removal could potentially make me want to be leary of the breeder, but since some say it's okay to keep I feel much better. I will however, talk with the vet, and maybe when it's time to have her spayed, I can have the dew claws removed if necessary. Thanks for the advice! |
Taylor was 9 weeks old when we got him. After we got him home I noticed his dew claws. I took him to my vet and he said that he could remove them when we would have him neutered. At 6 months we had him neutered, but the vet had a great deal of trouble removing his dew claws because they were malformed and ingrown. I'm so happy to have them out because I did worry about him catching them on toys etc. |
just one more note.....any reputable breeder will have them removed as soon as they are able. a breeder not having them removed is due to them not wanting to spend the money to do so. |

I prefer Not to have to deal with dew claws. My girl Lacie has them on the back and they do get caught in things. I removed the dew claws from the chorkie puppies I have even though we were NOT docking the tails. It is just easier for the pups later on. Good luck with you new pup. |

I have yorkies come to me for grooming and have had to send their owners to a vet because the dew claws have become ingrown....some have got hung up on fences, etc. As, a breeder I remove them at approximately 3 days of age at the same time the tails are docked. However, they can be done at the time of spay/nueter and removal of baby teeth. They serve no purpose |
