adopting new yorkie I already have a 1 yr old M yorkie, but I saw in an ad that there was a 4 yr available. I read the FQ&A, it says if you adopt it should be a puppy. I still would like to get her, does anyone have suggestions on how to make this an easy transition??? Im am going to take my dog with me when we go meet her. |
Adopting a dog that is not a puppy is just fine :) In fact, they may get along even better. The only advice I can give you is to make sure that you introduce them to each other on "neutral grounds." By that I mean, not your house or the other dog's house. That way, neither one of them feels like they have to protect their territory. Make sure they get along. It might take a couple of weeks for them to get used to each other, but hopefully, they will get along great immediately :) I think it's wonderful that you're trying to adopt a 4 yr old. Are they both spayed/neutered? |
Piper was 3 when I adopted him, and he did fine with the other dogs. You just have to take it nice and easy. Make sure you supervise them until you know how they will get along. |

That's great! Good luck!! :) |
Good Luck. PLenty of adult dogs are adopted all the time and do just fine. Its best to introduce the dogs on neutral territory and see how they react, that way neither feels like the other is intruding on their territory. Once they meet and greet and you see they get along, it should be fine to take the other one home. It might take a few days for your current Yorkie to get used to having a new family member. |
I understand where you are coming from. I had always brought dogs into my home as puppies, and even breed Bichons. But I was still nervous about bringing adult dogs into my home. Bubba & Roxie are my first yorkies and they came at 1 1/2 yrs of age. While you miss that cute puppy stage, there are so many other things you won't have to deal with!! You have already had some great advice. I would also add, try to get the female when you will be home for several days in a row, so she can adjust to your home and you are available to her just like you would a puppy. I also found talking with my vet to be important, your vet may give you added support and information. (although I can't imagine that someone on yt wouldn't have already have thought of it - lol.) Congratulations on a new yorkie!! |
I think it's great you are giving this girl a home. Is she from a bad home? A puppy mill? Do you know how she has been raised? This will all come into play when she joins your home. Good luck and enjoy! |

The person I am going through is a third party, she is selling it for her "friend". I am going to be extra attentive when I go and see her, just to make sure there is nothing going on that shouldn't. ;) |
