Canned Food Storage My dogs are starting their new dog food today - Canidae All Life Stages kibble and canned food. I'm feeding them 25% canned and 75% kibble. I bought the 13 oz canned food, and it is too much for 2 dogs so I have some left over. I don't want to leave it as is in the fridge, as it will make it reek. Anyone have any suggestions on how to store opened canned food? Thanks :D |
You can buy the dog/cat food can toppers at Petsmart, Petco, and probably even grocery stores or Walmart. They are kindof flexible and fit right on top of the open can to seal it shut. I feed my cats canned food and use these to store there food in the fridge |
Thanks! I'll go check out Petsmart tomorrow! :D |

They told me at the pet store that if you remove the food from the can and store it in a plastic container with a tight fitting lid, it can last for a week. |
I never store it in the can. I always transfer to it a plastic container with a lid. I throw it out after 4 days if there is any left. |
I put my cat's food in a plastic storage container too. |
I only add one tsp. of wet food to Kiki's Canidae dry. So for us one can lasts about a week. I divide the canned food into four sectoins and transfer three of the sections to a covered tupperware container and stick it in the freezer. I keep one portion in the fridge in a tupperware. When we are done with the refridgerated portion, I just take out a new portion to thaw in the fridge. This has been working for us and I know her food is always fresh. Yikes I have been letting one can last for 5 days. I just cover the can, I think I will start putting it in a tupperware container. |
I went to the store earlier today and picked up some new tupperware. I like that freezing idea! |
I don't give my girls can food very often but when I do I freez it what ever is left so it will be fresh for them:thumbup: |
I bought some small square plastic containers for Suzy's food. They're like tupperware but the cheap version, I got 8 of them for $2. When I open her food I put the rest in the fridge in those. The fridge doesn't smell like dog food at all when it's sealed in them. |

   I do this also. Mine are on kibble and canned too. |
I am wondering if you would be able to purchase the small round tins of food? I purchase Solid Gold 5.5 for Charlie. He receives 50% wet & high protein kibble which equates to 1/2 can split into two feedings. I also warm a bit in the microwave because cold food is too hard on their tummy. As recommended, 2-3 days maximum time in the refrigerator with a tight cover. PS Wipe their beard after eating otherwise your sofa get a good cleaning by them. Warmly, Deborah |
