New diet..now he stinks and rubs his bottom of the floor ?? We changed his diet from Science Diet to Canidae 2 weeks ago. Since then he has begun to smell and he is rubbing his bottom on the floor all the time. Are those 2 things related? Any suggestions? |
Hmmmmm, that is really strange. I will be curious to see some of the responses. Bella is on Canidae and doesn't smell or rub her bottom on the floor. I wonder what is going on with your furbaby! :confused: |
I don't know if it has anything to do with the food, but when dogs do that they need the gunk in their anal glands out (expressed). If you don't know how to do it your vet or groomer can do it. |
It might just be coincidence and not anything related to the food. He is showing the signs with the bum scooching that he needs his anal glands squeezed. If you have never done it before yourself take him to get it professionaly done. |
That's probably the smell you've noticed too; if his anal glands are full, the smell can be pretty awful. Bum-scooting is indicative of AG problems at least 90% of the time. The food wouldn't be causing it. :) |
Benji started doing that when I tried switching him from Science Diet to Canidae. Also every other food we tried including Canidae both Benji and Bella would have runny poo. I finially have them on Merrick and it seems a lot better. Benji still eats Science Diet every once in a while though because sometimes he wont anything but it. |
I'd let the vet or groomer look at his anal glads. That could also be a sign of worms. |
Something else you should do is always check his anus. Most often they scoot because they need their anal glands expressed but sometimes they scoot when they are not constipated and have poop stuck to their anus and will not allow them to have another bowel movement when they need to. Of course that can smell terrible and be very dangerous. Most dogs only need their anal glands expressed if they are having a problem and most say should not be done regularly. Add a teaspoon of cooked brocolli to their dinner once in awhile and it helps. |
Sounds like either his anal glands or worms. Also when dogs are switched from a low quality food to a high quality one they often go through a 'detox' period, it could be that. |
Yah i'm just going to take him in to get his glands expressed. He won't let me near his mouth or bottom so they will have to do that for me. Thanks for all the suggestions!! |
