help with nail clipping Hi everyone im new here my name is Connie I would like to know how i could clip my puppies nails so she wont have a fit. help please:( |
You might need to get someone to hold your puppy for you and distract them while you trim the nails. Trim just a little at a time so you don't cut the quick and make the nail bleed. If unsure about trimming, have a groomer or the vet show you |

When I first brought my puppies home I was able to trim off the tip with human nail clippers because their nails are soooo soft..but now that they have hard black nails I have a vet do it..Ive cut to the quick more than once and it scared the bajeebers outa me!! Dawn |
When Chip was first adopted his nails were really long because of his pre-rescue neglect. He would have extreme fits when he got his nails done, to the point of him having to wear a muzzle. He would make screaming groaning noises, and fidget the whole time. (I would hold him with his belly facing up and feet toward the groomer) Then one day the groomer used a file instead of the clippers, since then he has grown used to it and doesn't need to wear a muzzle anymore. It also helps if you have the same groomer doing it each time. |
Welcome to YT!! You joined on a day filled with excitement on the threads about Maddie, so that may be why so few have responded. Glad you are here. I just learned a new little trick about trimming nails. Lay your dog on her side, on your couch or somewhere you can easily be on your knees and at about the same level as her, Ok - if you're right handed, you've got the clippers in that hand, so with your left arm reach across her body and hold her paw, this allows your left arm to kind of hold her in place. clip both the front & back nails on that side -- be careful not to hit her quick, you don't want to hurt her & make her bleed. Then turn her to the other side and get the other 2 paws. I used to do it with the dogs between my legs and on their backs, it worked sometime. I've even wrapped my female up in a towel, and just had one paw out of the towel at a time, also, sometimes worked - but my girl got to moving to much. |
