Crate training? Hi...I am getting a bit anxious about going back to work tomorrow...I have had a week off to get Riley familiar and comfy at his new home..he has done really good with everything...he has only had 2 accidents in the last 2 days and he is sleeping wonderful at night..here is my delema. The last 2 times we have left him alone (once was when I went to the doctor for an hour and the other we didn't really "leave" just went out the front door and snuck around back to see how long he cried so out trainer could determine how he did he cried for about 40 min and then quieted down) and both times he pooped and it was all over the place...he was in his Xpen with his chew toys and a bed and wee wee pads...I am almost thinking that the xpen might just be to big for him and maybe crate training would be better as he sleeps really good at night in it...he did poop and pee before we did this test...but he still went...any suggestions? he also he hasn't pooped since yesterday afternoon and he ate a good dinner last night and a good breakfast this morning...any help would be great... |
crate training I feel bad for you, and this advise is too late but if you had started leaving her everyday for a few minutes, then a few hours, so and so, she might have adapted better. I put Tricksie in a play pen at 8 weeks, with her bed and pee pads and only let her out when I had to time to watch very closely so that she would use the pee pads, not hide from me, eat the pillows, etc. She is a year old and is wonderful, when I have to leave I put her in the playpen with toys, bed, a treat and a pee pad. When I return home, she knows that she will get a treat and runs to the pantry and SITS!!! She will get use to it, so don't worry. |
If you're going to be able to come home half-way through the day like at lunch, then I think a crate would be better than an x-pen. But if you're going to be gone all day then I'd stick with the x-pen because a puppy won't be able to hold it all day. |
I'd say go for either an x-pen or puppy proof one room. He will need to have some space to move around and play. Young puppies can't hold their bladder for long so I don't think you can expect him not to have an accident while your gone. Personally i'm not a fan of putting dogs in crates for long hours, they need to be able to move around, interestingly in sweden its illegal to use a crate apart from in the car. |
I'd put the crate inside his pen incase he wants to sleep in it, but since you've started with the pen I'd keep doing it. |
My yorkie is a year old and if I leave for ten seconds without putting him in his crate he will poop and pee all over because he is mad. I cant even run to the apt basement to change over the laundry. I always have to crate him or bring him with me. It is a habit that I have dealt with though. He doesnt mind his crate, he goes in it without any trouble and doesnt bark or anything. I think that when I leave without putting him in his crate he thinks somethings wrong and gets anxious. Luckily my boyfriend and I work different shifts so he doesnt have to be in the crate for more then a couple hours. |
