How do you give pills without food? Ellie has to take a Denosyl pill in the am without food. She has choked a couple times. We have to push it down her throat with our fingers.:( Tomorrow I will try syringing water in instead. Does anyone use pill applicators? Do they work? |

I drop it at the back of their throat, hold their mouth shut and massage the throat until they swallow it. |
Just put it in the back of her mouth and close her mouth gently and hold her head up a little until she swallows. If the denosyl is too difficult to administer, you can buy Vetri-DMG which is in liquid form. It does basically the same thing as denosyl. |
She won't just take a pill. It's not a treat to her. Thanks for all the good suggestions. |

Oh yeah, Yorkieluv, I was liking the liquid idea but we are having the hardest time getting her to take her vitamin E because we break the capsule. She HATES the taste and will not eat it. She will with vanilla ice cream but she obviously can't have that everyday. She will with banana sometimes. It is torture to her so I am not sure I could do another liquid.:( Usually I guess people put it in the SD canned which I won't let her have.:confused: Any ideas about that anyone? |
I used to try to get it in the back of her throat and close her mouth and wait for her to swallow but I have found a way that works for me. I eat alot of shaved turkey from the deli so I wrap the pill in a sm. piece of it but enough to cover it well, then I pick her up and hold her like a baby (belly up) she starts to smell it and I put it in her mouth and since she is up side down it just seems to go down in one gulp. Before I tried this I would think she got it down and in a second or two she would spit it out. Different things work for different dogs:) Good Luck |
Miko won't take pills with food either...He can't be tricked. If you put it in her mouth and hold her mouth shut, she will swallow. That's the only way to give Miko a pill. He used to fight it, but he's so used to it now that it doesn't even phase him. |
Oh I just noticed she wanted a way without food....ooops. Can't help there. |
Thanks anyway Crystalsmom. The only reason I want it without food is because it has to be. |
I use one of those pill shooters. They work great! I've had no problems using them on Cody or the cat. |

If is a hard pill I crush the pill and put it in a small 1/8 teaspoon open her mouth and closed it get in her tongue and she can't spit out, it work for me:thumbup: |
Well the only pills my babies currently take is their Heartworm pill. Tatum just chews the darn thing up and eats it (of course - my little piggy :rolleyes:) but Mr. Picky Stedman wants absolutely nothing to do with them what so ever. So for him, I have to actually stick the pill down his throat with my fingers - then rub/massage to make sure that it goes down and doesn't get stuck. |
