Grooming How do you stop your pup from nippng and biting your hand while trying to comb him/her? Also, his nails are getting long (12 weeks old), I'm afraid to cut them. Any tips? Thanks! |
It helps to have another person help you. Try to distract him with some good treats while you do it. Just do one paw at a time. If that doesn't work, you can probably buy a tiny muzzle or even use that mesh tape that people use to wrap their ankles (it sticks to itself I think). Also, if you look hard enough you can find a groomer who will show you how and even let you help. I'm finally able to do nails on my own, but my groomer INSISTS I bring them between appointments so she can pluck their ears (and cuddle them, I think.) They love her. We went through 3 groomers to find her, so they aren't easy to find but keep looking! Whatever you do don't let them bite you. They will think it is OK. Distract them, muzzle them, whatever but don't let them start to practice nipping when mommy cuts nails. |
I think the nipping will get better as he gets older and figures out what you are doing. Winstin is doing the same thing. My golden did that also but when she got older it stopped. I was also nervous about cutting Winstin's nails, so I asked the vet to do it when he went for shots a couple weeks ago. That helped and gave a me a better idea of what I was doing since his nails were so tiny. |
Oh as far as when you are combing, same thing. Let him sniff the brush and give him a treat. Get special treats out that you ONLY get out when you brush him, and give him one periodically. Neither of mine were so much into the brushing when I got them but now they will put up with almost anything, especially Loki. Be firm but don't push too far. Like, if they wiggle don't let them go, that rewards them for wiggling. But, if they have had enough hold on to them until they sit still for a few seconds and THEN let go and try again later. |
I found after a few times at the groomer, Gracie no longer fights me when I try to do her nails etc. |
Perseverance. You just have to get them used to it. At first it's fight, fight, fight...but eventually they accept it. :) |
