Coat color changes?? Ok Bailey was 1 year old June 3rd, my question is.... Bailey back is still really dark.. his head has really lightened up.. I have read that it can take up to 2 years for their coats to change. But, I have noticed on here most of your babies are younger and alot lighter. How long did it take for your dogs coat to change colors?? 1-6 months 6months- 1 year 1-2 years 2+ years |
I wanted a light colored yorkie and I read somewhere you can tell if they will be light if you look at the parents and sometimes if you look at the roots of the hair it should show light hair growing. I did this when I picked Chico out and he'll be 5 months on July 2. His head is growing out very light blonde with the tips black still, his legs are also blonde now and I gave him an at hom puppy cut so all the puppy hais on his main body is now silver/grey. |
Fred is changing color right now. His head is so silver it looks like white and his back is a steel gray. I loved his puppy colors black and gold but he didn't stay that color! Now, his color makes him look like Grandpa Fred. |
Both Baileys parent were light colored,, Dad was the blue and mom was more golden,, His roots are changing, and he MIGHT get a puppy cut next time he goes to the groomer,, and I know that will help, But, Im just amazed at some pups that are so young and so light colored already! I guess its like weight,,ya never know what your gonna get??! |
...I didn't vote...because Sully's coat changed color three times in the past 10 months of his whole little life! So I have no idea! :p What do you guys think: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9244 |
I wouldn't be too worry about the changing of colors . It took sandrine 2 years before she changed . I was thinking she would stay black and gold all her life . The 3 others started to change at 18 months |
I have no idea, but very interesting question! Keeley is 3 months and has really bad roots. If we were to trim the hair on his head, he would be really light already. His legs are very light too. But his back is as black as can be. I am interested in what color he'll be. I can't wait for him to have a tan face. I can tell the color is going to be so pretty already. I like it so much that I am tempted to take him into my stylist and have her match the color and put that into my hightlights. :D |
Hey, you know great minds think alike! :) Actually, I posted Sully's coat color change pics on 6-19-05. But it's all good :) |
Ramsey has silver hairs coming in on his head, and coming through on his back. My mom thinks that he is stressed and that they are grey hairs... lol |

Piper's Puppy Parents 2 Attachment(s) Not sure if Piper will take after his Momma-Pup or Daddy-Pup. Here are pics of them. The Daddy has a lot of silver and gold and is the one on the right of the picture. His Momma has a gold/tan face and threads of silver all through out her torso coat. She's the little cutie front and center. I can see threads of silver starting on Piper's head and he has silver hairs on the sides of his face under his ears but not sure how much he'll get of either parent. |
I wish they could keep that puppy look forever!! I just had both of my dogs groomed and all of their black was cut out. They now both have light tan faces. Both of their backs have changed to a light gray. |
I was sooo sad the first time they cut the hair in Maximus' face because all of a sudden he looked so different (to me)..his face was so mucher lighter..and his hair is growing in almost a silvery color..he looked like a big boy, not a baby anymore I actually cried a tear because he is getting big so quickly, I can remeber when he was only 10 weeks and that was only 2 months ago..but I feel like the time is flying... :( ....I wish he could keep his puppy coat..it's so cute :) |
I dont want Buddys hair cut yet mainly cos my mother in law took her yorkie to the groomers at about 5 months to have his hair cut short and she was really freaked out when she collected him cos he didnt even look like the same dog, he was completely different colour, she wasreally upset she had to keep cuddling him to reassure herself it was still her Benjie! Buddy has still got all black body with no sign of change ( his mum has black body still and she is 3yrs old) but his head is weird he has black tips then silver grey come through now beige is coming through! 3 different colour layers lol I love the puppy look i'm hoping he'l atleast keep his black body like his mum :p |
2 Attachment(s) Pic #1 is Sammi at 16 weeks old...#2 is her now...HUGEE color change...:) |

You made me feel better though cos either colour she's gorgeous, wont mind if Buddy's colour change is like Sammi's! :) |
2 Attachment(s) I wasn't going to vote because mine are still changing. I don't have any that are 2 yrs old yet. I went ahead and voted because they all showed changes before they were 6mo old. Lady is my oldest at nearly 17 mos. She has changed twice and I love the color of her face now. She was very sooty and now Autumn is very sooty. I don't think Autumn will go the gold that Lady is but I'm hoping it will be pretty. The hair above Autumn's eyebrows is turning a whitish(sp?) color, very pale. I am excited to see what her face will look like in another 7 months. The first pic is Lady and the second Autumn Rose. |
Rio at 3 is still mostly black with thumbprints on his face, He never really started changing till he was 2.He has a soft coat and i think that is pretty indicative of one, also he is changing into what I would call gray not blue. Mignon at 6 mths has already started getting a blue body color and her hair is white on her head, she should have a very nice silk coat.At least i hope so!! The softer coat is so much harder to take care of. |
Marley has silver on head, but when I comb it, I noticed that he has a line of dark growth in it suggesting that during the growth something could of happened to his health or diet to go dark and then grow silver again. It looks like he has a very bad colour job. |
I'm curious.... does the poll ask when they STARTED changing color or when they were FINISHED changing color? I am curious about when they are done changing color. Tobie is 8 months old and his back has already changed to silver/gray/blue but he still has some silver mixed in with the tan on his head and I was wondering if it was going to stay that way or if it will eventually all change to tan. |
My yorkie Fido is 1 year and 1 month old, but has still loads of black on his back, stumach and litle bit on his feets. He will propably be all grey around 3 years. He has grey on most of his face, on his stomach and under his tail, and the half on his feets :) I always see more and more gray hairs :) Its not bothering me much that he's not all gray. |
My Lexie will be 3 in November and she just started turning blonde. I can see about an inch of growth across her backbone. At first I thought she was losing her hair on her backbone because she had a litter of 6 puppies in the spring and it was really stressful on her; however, after the pups were all weaned and she was stress free, I could definitely tell her hair is completely changing colors again. Right now she is a silvery color. My boy, Wyatt is 2 1/2 and still all black (silky) with a tan colored head. I don't see any other changes in his color yet. |
my shorkie was a dark dark brown, and now he's a tan color, he turned light around 3 months |
Once Kayla's head changed and got lighter color it has stayed the same. Dudley is 5mo. old and he is getting alot of silver on top. His mom was nearly all silver. The breeder told me they could change colors up to 3yrs. old. |
