Puppy Mills?? Please tell me about puppy mills. I am cluless. What are the dangers? My 19 year old son bought a yorkie puppy from an ad in the paper for his girl friend but they broke up three days later and although he told her she could keep the puppy ---long story --- she gave him back!!! I fell instantly in love with him.....and he is now MINE!!! My son, Nick, said he did not see the parents-- they were not there because the breaders were in Celina OH and they sent puppies to Dayton Ohio to their sons house to reach a broader market. They had two liters there. The smaller ones he was told their DOB was 3/11 and the larger puppies from the other liter had a dob of 3/24. He was told this one would stay lots smaller compared to the other litter but when we got the papers we found out the dob were switched and actually ours was from the younger litter therefore the reason for them being smaller. He paid 550.00 for my male and the one female was 750.00. Two of my neighbors who fell in love with mine went to this breeder and each bought males for 300.00 from the other litter. Their yorkies are quite big at 15 + and only 6 months old. Mine is 11 pounds and almost 6 months old. Theirs have short wirery hair and mine was long and curly (before grooming). Their business card that was mailed with the papers reads "Puppies To Love" Max and Joy on Burrville rd in celina, OH. It also reads that they breed golden retriever, coker spaniels, maltese and silkies. I would not trade him for anything but i am concerned if he is from a puppy mill and what exactly this means and how to i find out? Would a breeder really send 2 different litters of Yorkies to another city to reach a broader market....sounds strange to me... what is a puppy mill? |
If you dog is healthy and you're keeping him - I would not worry at this point where he came from. From what I read - puppy mill puppies are more likely to be sickly - Have genetic issues - and should be against the law - but if your dog is healthy - I would not worry about where he came from and just love him - enjoy him..... The thing is not to buy from a puppy mill - You're supporting breeders who are in it just for the money - not the love of the breed. - But you have him - he's OK - enjoy!!!! |
I'd be happy with him being that he's healthy. It would take a lot of investigation to find out if he came from a puppy mill, and you wouldn't want to give him back anyway. |
Puppy Mills are really bad, just like the last post said. They also do not give the dogs much attention. It does sound strange. As long as the vet has said he is healthy, I would not worry about it. Think of it as saving a puppy. Where are you from?? I have been on the other side of the fence. I have not bought any of my dogs from a breeder (please Yorkie talk friends do not hate me). I have gotten all of them from a local pet store. With both my big girls we were allowed to go see the parents and where they came from so that made me feel pretty safe that they were from a good place. However, with Winstin we recently got a new pet store in town. My sister bought her Jack Russell from the new store. They told her that they go to the homes and check things out before ever accepting puppies from people. I stop in there a lot and the puppies are always friendly and very happy. The thing about the new store is they are not in enclosed cages. You can interact with all of them. Pick them up play and give them treats. Winstin was from a litter of two both males and were the only Yorkies they have gotten in the year they have been open. All three of my dogs have the greatest personality. If my babies did come from a mill (I am 99.9% sure none of them did) at least they have a good home. Winstin's original vet record I got with him is from a town less that 30 minutes away. You do not hear of a lot of Yorkies around here and that is why I was comfortable getting him where I did. Sorry I have rambled. Puppy mills are not good and neither are most pet stores. Congrats on the puppy and We want to see lots of pics. |

I live in Tipp City, Ohio - it is just 10 minutes north from the Vandalia airport and 20 minutes from Dayton. I would love to take my son to this new pet store? How fun!!!! If you could give me the name and street -- i will do a map quest and visit. We go to the mall pet stores just to hold and play with every caged puppy all the time! I could never love Ollie any less no matter where he came from.... i just didnt know what the puppy mills fears were. Thanks for the info! |
That's not to far away. The pet store is Jacks Aquariums and pets at 1125 Trenton Ave.(just of of 75 here in Findlay) . They are good people. I know they have a few stores in Ohio and it's a private chain. Winstin and I stopped in a week ago and they just love him. A little girl wanted him and her parents left with her in tears because she wanted my baby. We were invited to stop in and play dress up when the coats come in for winter. They even said I could take pictures. |
Here are some sites, but be warned.......these are graphic pictures and not for the weak-hearted. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search |

Very, very sad. I do not what else to say. Thank God I have not seen that around here. Although my step dad delivers propane to a place that is a puppy mill. He has to go in the house and the one floor of the house is nothing but stacked cages with dogs. I just can not understand how people can be so cruel. No dog deserves that kind of living. :( |
It sounds like your dog did come from a puppymill. Places who sell several breed dogs and have that many litters per yr is a huge red flag. Also, it sounds like your son bought from a broker. A reputable breeder will not sell to brokers. Puppymills keep their dogs in tiny cages outside of the home, and usually in deplorable conditions. They do not screen or test for certain diseases and defects, so dogs from puppymills are more likely to have a congenital defect/disease. |
To read more about puppy mills go to hua.org. They are a rescue in Auburn, Nebraska that often go to pick up the poor babies after a puppy mill is busted. |
Oh that is so very sad....I had a feeling something didnt seem right with my son getting him so cheap and then the parents not being there and the home owners not being the breeders and all.....I am just going to look at it as saving him and feel lucky he is healthy. I adore him!! |
