Can she be registered AKC? What tests do I need to have? (Sad story included...=(...)
 

Just wanted to ask a question. My Maddie is registered CKC. Her daddy is an AKC yorkie, and her mom a CKC. Her mom has actually since passed away. I had a deposit on another puppy from her breeder before I got Sophie and when I found out the circumstances of her mother's death I IMMEDIATELY withdrew my deposit (luckily he gave it back) and found a reputable breeder in the area (where I got Soph).

Here's the sad story: I was talking to the breeder on the phone in July, excited about getting my second baby, and I happened to ask him how Maddie's mommy was doing. He stated that she was "dead" and I proceeded to ask him about the circumstances. He reluctantly told me the details. First of all, let me say that Maddie was born in October 06. When I got her (I was a new Yorkie mommy and didn't know much about them yet) and wanted to see the parents I saw her dad, but was told that her mom was at the vet because of a calcium drop. So anyways, back to the story, he told me that "a few months ago", which HAD to have been Maddie's mother's NEXT heat after having Maddie's litter (because Maddie isn't even a year old), she was due to have puppies and she DIED in route to the vet. Apparently she had "too many" puppies and she had a "heart attack" in the car on the way there. I was very upset and demanded the money back that I had for the deposit on my new baby from him. I had never gotten an impression like that from him before, because I was very happy with Maddie from the beginning, but after I did a lot of research, I figured out that he's obviously a BYB. I later found out that he has hundreds of dogs and is basically running a puppy mill sort of situation. I am SO glad I didn't get another one from him.

Anyways, Maddie is my baby, and I would LOVE for her to have puppies one day. However, I really need to know what kind of things she should be tested for prior to having pups. Also, I really wanted to know if there is ANY way she can be AKC registered. I have heard of getting DNA tests, but is that true? Thanks in advance.

No, a CKC (Continental Kennel Club) dog cannot be AKC registered. A dog an only be AKC registered if both parents are AKC. If the dog is Canadian kennel club, then the AKC will recognize the registration but I'm assuming you mean ContKC. That is a very sad situation about the mother. What's your purpose in breeding her? If she came from a puppy mill, she probably doesn't come from the best lines and what if she takes after her mother in difficulty with birthing? Breeding should be done to improve the breed, not just because a yorkie is cute and you want puppies. Breeding a puppy mill dog is not breeding for the betterment of the breed. Also, what if something goes terribly wrong and she dies from giving birth? Is it really worth it to you to take that risk? You should have her spayed and just enjoy her as your sweet baby.

If you do decide to breed her, she needs to be bile acid tested, patellas OFA-certified. She and the stud need to be tested for brucellosis. She should also be evaluated by a show breeder/AKC judge to see if she is of quality to breed

Thanks for the info. I DO know about all the risks, and have had many vets and friends who breed check her out. They have all given me the OK. She seems to be healthy and has had most of those tests done, which have all come back negative. I will finish up all the tests and she will be at least 2 years old before she breeds. I am aware that breeding should NOT be just to make "cute" puppies because I want them. I have acquired lots of info about Yorkies and am OPEN to any other info. All her puppies would be sold to approved homes ONLY and possibly with a spay/neuter contract (I haven't decided how I feel about this). She is my baby and I have considered spaying her, as well as Sophie, and if ANYTHING isn't 100% in her check-ups or tests I will immediately have that done! Thanks again for the info.

Well, I have recently decided to get into breeding, and I will definitely be breeding Sophie (who I know is from good lines). Maddie was from a litter that I traced back and doesn't SEEM to have any problems, and I will make absolute sure that she has all the tests done and that I have no doubts from ANYONE who has checked her before I do anything...but I do understand where you're coming from, trust me! Thanks for the advice!

My vet told me they also need and eye CERT which cannot be done until 2 years old. She said she has seen just as many pups/dogs with eye issues as luxating patellas or hip dysplasia. So she defiantely would have to be 2 years old if you have these tests ran before breeding her.
