yorkie/maltese?
 

Hi guys! I'm new here and still looking for a puppy. Honestly, I'm having trouble deciding between a yorkie and a maltese. Thought maybe a Morkie would be a good idea. I plan to train this puppy to be a pet therapy dog. Any input will be appreciated!

Why don't you get one of each? I have a Yorkie and a Maltese (plus a Chihuahua) and it's an awesome combo! :D

Good idea!! ;) Maybe I can talk my husband into another! We only have 1 and obviously chose a Yorkie! We are thrilled!! :) They are a great breed and our Bella is a super addition to our family! :aimeeyork

I already have a greyhound, and don't worry, she gets along great with small furry animals! I'm definately leaning toward a yorkie.

Saw a Morkie on the Today show today. They are adorable. I had a Maltese but he was mean. My yorkie is so sweet. I have to see the dog and feel the connection before deciding. Good Luck

My mom's friend has a morkie and he is AWESOME!! He's (almost) the sweetest little thing (besides everyone's yorkies...haha! ) He looks exactly like a biewer yorkie. He's hysterical!

I had a Maltese many years ago. I loved her to bits, she was very sweet. I wouldn't mind another, but think I'll stick to yorkies!

I would stick with either a yorkie or a maltese. Maltese/yorkie mixes are very cute, but I would never buy one from a breeder. In my opinion, no reputable breeder intentionally breeds mixed breeds.

Hi Betsi Welcome to YT. This is a GREAT place. If you are looking for a Yorkie / Maltese mix up pup please try rescue or www.petfinder.com. There are so many little ones up for adoption. Breeders made up the name "Morkie" and call them designer pups but really they are just mutts or I prefer to call them mixed up pups. I have a "morkie" if you will and they are great dogs. The best of both worlds. I got her out of the newspaper after a woman who bought her decided not to keep her. I also just got a beautiful Yorkie pup off Petfinder. Rescue is wonderful because you're giving a dog a home and in turn for your adoption fee (Usually between $200 and $400) you're getting a dog that has been vetted and spayed or nuetered, had all their shots, more then likely micro chipped already etc. It's a win win situation. I have one maltese and one yorkie and they are both the sweetest little dogs ever!! Like jrsygal suggested, you can find tons of morkies on petfinder.com :) I have seen morkie puppies on there several times.
You could research some yorkie breeders and maltese breeders and see which way you want to go.

Thanks everybody! I'm a big fan of petfinder..that's where we found our greyhound. Actually our son adopted her..then he got married last month and moved to Seattle (that's a LONG way from Texas!) so now I have a granddog. I'll probably get a yorkie. I was considering a morkie 'cause I couldn't make up my mind! I am able to be home everyday now so I'll have time for a puppy. You guys are great!! Thanks for helping me do my homework. Betsi

I have both a Yorkie & a Maltese and you can't really go wrong with either. It is just a matter of personal taste. You really need to spend some time with both breeds to see what suits you best. My Maltese is a little more sure of himself than my Yorkie. The Yorkie tends to have a little more nervous temperament and is more difficult to train. The Maltese seems more like he wants to please me and the Yorkie seems to think she is training me to please her. They are both precious dogs & you will love them. :)

As to the Morkie mix, I wouldn't purchase one -not because I don't think it wouldn't be a wonderful pet. I'm sure it would be darling. I just don't believe we need to encourage indiscriminate breeding of pets. Now if you could rescue one, that would be great. Honestly, I think all of our pets should be neutered unless they are champion material. Good luck on your new addition.

Thanks Doortego! Do you think the difference in your dogs is a male female thing or just their personalities? I guess that's impossible to answer. I just want a pet that's snuggly and not too hyper. I'll be patient until I find the right one. I have had dogs all of my life and have always had them spayed or neutered. I volunteer at our local shelter and I see what happens when people aren't careful. Yorkies are just too cute! Getting a puppy is serious to me because I intend to keep it forever. My husband will retire in about a year so when we travel the dog will go with us. It's nice to have YT to bounce my ideas around!

As partial as I am to yorkies, I think they are typically considered more hyper and high-strung than maltese. Maltese are known for being more laid-back. They're both adorable! :D

I have had Maltese for many, many years. Anima was my first one. She was so sweet. She traveled all over the U.S. with me. I just had to have her put to sleep because her quality of life was not there anymore. I have Bella, and she is so beautiful...lovely personality, super love bug!!!

I have always wanted a Yorkie too, and finally I am going to have one on Saturday. I met her parents, and she already knows how to fetch. She has even grow up with other Maltese.

I too thought about a Morkie, but I have seen so many on groups with problems. One little Morkie has stiff legs and prances like a horse. Sure, that might be cute for 10 seconds until the realization hits that the little thing is going to have problems that are going to be expensive and heartbreaking.

When dealing with a breeder they guarantee the health of your dog for a year. I decided to go back to a breeder that was honest with me, and was going to give me guarantee for the puppy.

I wanted a female Yorkie that was healthy, happy, and going to be a "normal" weight dog. I believe the terminology tea cup is such a disservice to the Maltese, Yorkie, and other breeders. I realize that some dogs turn out small, but altering them to turn out to sizes of 2 and 3 lbs is just as bad a mixing breeds of dogs. This is my personal belief. Don't get my wrong... I too think they are so cute, but just not worth it to me.:cool:
