Gland squeezing This may sound gross but I really need to ask. I have never heard of this before. My Yorkie Jayci was sliding across the carpet in a sitting position. I have seen this before with him and I always check him. I usualy find a dried piece of "you know what" stuck to him. Well my mother is here visiting and she saw him doing that and yelled at him saying "I had to watch you doing that all day" Knock it off!! Well needless to say she has me mad right now because of her comments. So anyway she goes on in a snarky tone. Telling me that I need to get his glands squeezed and thats why he is dragging his butt on the carpet. Now, I have never heard of this and would appreciate some insight. I told her what I always find when he does this and she is still insisting that she is right. Then went on to say that the groomer can do it. My mother never had a dog in her life and Jayci is the only Yorkie she has ever been around. And I checked him and did not find anything. Any thoughts on this would be helpful. Thanks:animal-pa |
Funny thing is your Mom is probably right..... |
Boy I really hate to tell you this BUUTTTT your mother is correct. Sometimes if their stool is not firm enough or large enough your pup will need his anal glands squeezed. And yes the groomer can do it or your vet can do it and show you how to do it if you want to take on that task.   |
My lab has this issue, she has since she was a pup. We've been hoping she'd grow out of it but she's 4, so not likely. You can get them expressed. I take Bridget to the vet for it, I'm sure some groomers would be fine but I trust my vet more. They have the option of surgery but it's uber expensive. |
Here is a video of doing it.... http://www.expertvillage.com/videos/...ics-glands.htm |
somehow I don't think I want to see that ;) I won't even watch them at the vets office |
Sounds like the anal sacs need to be expressed. I'd reccomend having a vet do it over a groomer. |
Thanks Ok, while I hate to admit she is right thanks for the responses. It was really her know it all tone and the way she yelled at him that has me mad. Like he can help it!! I will ask the vet next time he goes. This is not something I want to do myself. Maybe I should show her the video and let her do it??? |
