Second dog? Hi all, I have a 2 yr old yorkie boy, who is very social and gregarious, but I can tell that he has been very sad and unhappy since i've had to be gone more. I was contemplating getting him a friend. I was wondering what its like to have a second dog. What's the additional work like, expense? Emotional aspects for both him and me? |
i got my second one after 6 yrs and wished i had done it alot sooner i couldnt belive how much happier it made my first and it wasnt any harder to have 2 dogs then one and to tell you the truth now i have 3 and its the greatest thing i ever did.they all need a play mate good luck |
I only have one so I can't really help you.. Just wanted to say good luck and go for it!!! I'm sure your baby would love to have a buddy to play with. just make sure you give your baby that was there first a lot of attention so theres no jealousy.. hope to see pics if you do get a second baby! |
Mine are about 9 years apart. They get along well but the energy level is pretty different. I would think that two closer together would be helpful in their getting along. Good Luck!! |
I have 2 yorkies and it is no more trouble then one really. But you do have double duty of grooming and vet bills. They will entertain each other while you are gone and you wonder why you waited so long to get him a playmate. |
I definately recommend getting another one, its not any harder then 1 IMO!! |
I just got my second. Max, my first is 17 months old and Gracie Leigh is 3 months old. I'm so happy! The vet and the groomer will cost more. Food for a yorkie is no big deal. Pee pads, until she's trained are going like crazy! I spent about $150 - $200 to get ready for her (an ex-pen, another bed, new toys for both of them, etc.) It's a lot of time supervising them until they settle in together and I watch her and try to supervise her potty habits. This won'tlast that long though. I highly recommend it! |
Two is heaven...I am so glad that the breeder called Jack and I about Sasha just about 1 month after we got Seth. I can not even imagine Sasha not being with us now. And Seth and Sasha are great together:D :D |
I have to agree with every one else. 2 is great. There were two in our litter. We picked up our first one and went home. Several weeks later, was speaking to the breeder letting her know how things were going- She mentioned that the other little boy was still there if we were interested. We went and got him. It has been terrific. THey play- sleep- eat- do everything together. And I get twice the loving... lol...Working on hubby for a little girl.... |
I think having more than one is great, I really do think that they thrive on the companionship of others of their own species. I also find that older dogs who have never lived with other dogs seem to have less socail skills with other dogs, sort of like they have forgotten how to communicate with them. I have 3 and plan to get one more (am waiting for a maltese puppy) and we also have the dogs of friends and family visit often. I've never had any real problems introducing them and have found that they take to the newcomer really quickly, especially if its a puppy. Just make sure that when the new pup is in the room you give your older dog lots of extra fuss so that they assosiate the newcomers presence as a positive thing. They also might appreciate some time alone with you occasionally. Obviously everything is double the cost. |
He may be a little jealous at first, but will come to love his new friend. You need to double your vet bills for shots and such. They eat such a little bit anyway that I didn't really notice a change in the price for food, but you'd have to get a few extra toys. All in all I think it's wonderful having more then one. It's just you'll have double the loving. |
