microchip question My local humane society is offering a clinic this weekend where they will offer microchipping for $10. I would like to get my babies microchipped because we take them everywhere with us and if anything should ever happen that one of them would get separated from us- this would be another way to identify them if they would lose their identification tag. My quesiton is this- I was always thought that this was a procedure that was done while the pet was asleep. Since this is a clinic- that will not be the case. Will it be extremely painful or will it cause about the same discomfort as a shot? Where is the microchipped placed at on the dog? I have never had a pet microchipped before, so I am not sure how big the chip is or where it is placed. Any information you can offer would be very helpful. Thanks! |

That's great that they offer it for $10!! Take advantage of it. The microchip goes between their shoulder blades. I don't think they need to be asleep. |
The microchip is usually place in the shoulder blade area of your doggie. I always have my pets placed when they are spayed and asleep. :p It can be done without them being asleep because its done like a shot...but the needle is larger because the chip has to move through it. So some pain is involved. :( I've always done it at first opportunity with them being asleep...and that is at spaying time for me. The vets charge $28 for the chip- Either way you do it..its very important... ;) Melissa & "Baby Sophie" :aimeeyork |
my baby came microchipped from the place i got him from ... but the "breeder" never informed me about it until a few days after i got him i was feeling all over his body and came across it rite on the back of his neck. when i called the guy to tell me if he was micro chipped he returned my call a day later to tell me that he was, and that i would have to call him back to get the # i called the next day he told me to call on a friday ... i did and he gave me the # but im still a lil bit iffy about it. the vet i went to had a scanner but it wasnt working ... so i havent verified if the #s match up. this is one of the reasons why i havent registered my puppy b/c i need to write down the microchip # and the company where hes listed under. ive tried to call the breeder to get the info on the company he used to micro chip Chicle but he doesnt return my calls anymore. how would i go about finding out what company the microchip is under ... if i go to the vet will they know? |
should i attempt to call him again? |
Yes , you should . I always gave the number and name of the company to my new puppy's owner . It won't hurt your breeder to give you this information .Unless , he lied to you about it . I have my own scanner and I show them the number from it so they exactly know they have the right pups . |

thanks! :) are there different organizations that do microchips ? or is there only one place? |
They ususally wait on yorkies until they are older to chip unless they are having surgery because the chip is large for them because of their size and it is painful due to the large gauge needle used. I would definitely recommend the microchip and the tatoo both if possible just to be safe. I think they are attempting to standardize the chips s that any scanner will work on them and the registry is uniform. |
Since 2 years , I place the microchips for my puppies . I do it when they are 8 weeks old . I never heard a sound coming out of them when it is done , on the other hand , one of my friend who is a Shih Tzu breeder use the tattoo method and you should hear the babies crying . I don't know if it is the same for breeders who tatooes their pups . |
Thanks for the replies Thanks everyone for the replies- I feel more informed now- I will definitely get it done. I know I will feel better knowing there is another form of identification on each one of my babies that can not be removed or lost. As for the dicomfort level- I guess it is just like their vaccinations, it is a small price to pay for their well-being. |
Bella was microchipped while awake. It seemed like a very normal procedure and I believe she was only five months at the time. It took all of ten mins. at the vet, in and out. She was a little quite when they handed her back to me, but once we got home, she was all happy and normal again. I think you should do it. |

Most vets anesthesize the pups to do a tattoo.. So I personally would have it done when other procedures are done for anethesia. |
Remy has a chip and he was awake the whole time. They had to take him in the back because I hate needles and couldn't watch. I think all dogs should be chipped so if lost you have a better chance finding them. And at that price you can't be. I paid $29.99 for Remy to be chipped. I say go for it! |
