Eddie needs a buddy We're thinking about getting a second Yorkie for Eddie to play with, and we're wondering if we should get a male or female. Eddie is neutered, and we'd likely neuter another male or spay a female. Eddie is 13 months old. Should we buy a puppy? Look for another dog Eddie's age? Any advice would be appreciated. Eddie spends 4-5 hours most days with a female chihuahua that lives 2 doors away. But the chihuahua is moving, and we're afraid Eddie will get lonely. |
I would say don't rush it too quickly. first look to see if he really acts differently after the chihuaua moves. if he does then go for it. of course if you really want another yorkie........ GET IT ANYWAY!!!! LOL ;) good luck i'm sure it will all work out for the best! |
I can honestly say having 2 is the BEST. My girls are always together ...you don't see one without the other -They have such a blast playing - sometimes I think they're putting on a show for me cause, they'll be playing... and ALWAYS checking to make sure I'm watching - it's totally adorable ...They spy in the yard together - they sleep & eat together and they're always by my side....what more could you want ? :D Go for it if you can - it's great having 2 :) :) I'd go for a male if you do decide to get one- Good Luck ! |
I'd say you can't go wrong with another one. Eddie isn't too old that he would be offended by a new brother/sister. They will keep each other company when they have to be left alone, and you will enjoy them so much. I was surprised how much fun it is to have 3! I think that either sex would be fine since Eddie is fixed. Maybe a rescue would be in order? There are usually ones that age availabe all the time, unfortunately some people just want them when they are puppies :( ... |
having 3...? yorkiegal - what are the ages of your three boys? We have two males now 8 and 4 months old. Both are going to be neutered. I would love to get a female but was wondering about having 3 - "two's company, three's a crowd" ya know. Do you find it easier having all males...? I love my boys and they are so playful and fun loving. I know sometimes females can have a little more attitude. We were thinking of waiting a year to get a female but I am wondering if that is an appropriate time for the boys? |
Go for it!! I was nervous getting a second one, but believe me 2 is better than 1!!! I have a girl and a boy, and I've read that you should get the opposite sex, but I don't think it really matters. Lots of people on here have 2 boys or 2 girls and they're fine. I think the age is perfect. I got Tucker when Biddy was about a year and it worked out great. She was young enough that they love to play together, but old enough that she was already trained (for the most part - LOL!), and I think this was huge in training Tucker. He does what she does!! God luck & let us know!!! |
Just the advice I was hoping to see. Sounds like we can't go wrong either way, and my wife would love to get a female. Maybe we'll check into rescues first. |

I love having two Yorkies. They play with eachother and entertain eachother when I can't. They also teach each other things (good and bad) Riley and TJ are litter box trained. Riley sometimes only sticks his 2 front feet in and he thinks he's in the box but he pees all over the floor. Well TJ has started doing this. Also, I was haviong a difficult time teaching TJ the "down" command. I pulled out the treats to try again and Riley came over. I made sure TJ was watching and I gave Riley the "down" hand gesture and said down and he did. So I tried it on TJ, and after watching Riley, he did it! I was so happy! Having two Yorkies is a blessing! I will never be able to have just one ever again! |
