"Running From The Dog Catcher" Maggie has been doing very well on her training, inside the house. I thought it was time to move the training to our fenced yard, outside. Normally when I take her outside to do her business, it's always on a leash. The reason for that, I want her to do her business and not investigate every moving thing on the property. Anyway, yesterday was her first OFF LEASH training session. You would have thought somebody had shot her in the butt, when I took her leash off. She ran like a banshee on fire. It didn't matter what her name was, she wasn't going to listen. By the time I finally caught her, her named wasn't even close to Maggie. I told her "BAD, BAD, DOG". My big dogs heard me say that, and they took their tails and hooked it to the doghouse. How in the dog, do you train them outside? This dog catcher has got to learn better catching principles. :teethysmi |
So, you found out the hard way that catch me if you can is one of their favorite little games to play? Oh my gosh we went through the same thing in the beginning and thank god we have a 6 foot tall fence around our yard because we would have looked like we flipped our lids trying to catch zippy little Teddy to our neighbors. Think about this...you need to make the pay off for coming worth while to them. Find something that they just love and bribe the heck out of them until they get the idea of what you are trying to get them to do. You use their weakness (treats, special toy) against them and when they do come for whatever it is you choose to use you really have to party it up. I kid you not my whole family thought I was nuts with my whoo hoo's and yah Teddy's but it worked and now he comes on a dime because either way he wins in his mind. If they go into the catch me if you can mode just turn and walk away and try again in a few minutes. Once she knows you're wise to the little games she will come around and until then good luck! |
Run Maggie Run! LOL Brenda... Your a very good story teller! :D Had me laughing this morning first thing! LOL Maggie sounds like your typical Free Spirit Yorkie that just wants to have some fun! lol We have a fenced back yard. Wow, what a mad crazy dog! lol. I couldn't help you out there because i do not have a fenced in yard so I can't even try it. GOod luck! |
Maximus did the same thing to me the other morning..but very dangerously..I went ot throw out the garbage and while I turned to put it in the can he yanked and the lease flew out of my hand and he was off..towards???...the sound of a lawn mower..so now I am panicking...but I figure if I show too much interest he will keep runnign and end up going in the street or by the lawn mower...so I called him at which point he dropped and then I pretended I HAD SOMETHING IN MY HAND (A LEAF)....Mr. nosy butt HAD to eat whatever I ahd..when he got close enough I grabbed him and told him Not nice (what I tell him when he bites)..and we went inside..after that I couldn't do a walk |
