Microchip, Questions about losing a dog.... Ok I know everyone has said what a good idea microchips are. Both my dogs are microchipped. My question is this. If my dog was lost or stolen. How can they be found through the microchip? I'm assuming if the dog is ever taken to a vet ,the vet might scan them. But folks, why would a vet scan a "pet" if they dont suspect it's stolen? I take my dogs all the time to the vet. There isnt like a hidden scanner somewhere that will alert them that this is a missing or stolen dog . Can anyone that understands this COMPLETELY please explain it to me. The only way that they would scan an animal is if it's been found and taken to a shelter. But if someone steals your pet and ends up taking him for a first time visit , the vet wont scan that animal. So I think it sorta works but it's not a dream come true like a tracking device.... I think what you can do in the event you lose your dog is put up lots of flyers, notify vets in and around your area of your lost pet and put them on alert that someone might try to pass your dog as their own. I remember when I took Bella into the vet for the first time, they asked me questions like "oh, is this a new dog?”Where did you get her?" "Where is the breeder located?" I think these are pretty routine questions that are asked when a new dog is brought in for the first time for a check up and I'd like to think that if the vet was on alert of a stolen dog and a similar one shows up, they'd automatically scan it to check. |
Homework: We should all call our vets and take a poll. I know they all have the scanner but when they scan I do not know. I would like to think they would scan any new dog that was brought in, but I don't know what the protocol is. Maybe if we express our concern they will do it more often. |
Good idea! I'll call around to the vets in my area tomorrow and lets all try to do that and see what we report back. |
I had wondered what the answers were to those questions myself. Very good idea Kim to get the vets more involved in looking out for lost and stolen pets. I am also going to phone around to my area vet clinics tomorrow and see what their policies are in regard to new patients. If they hadn't thought about it I will suggest they start seeing pet thefts seem to be on the rise. |

In my opinion, if your dog is lost or stolen, I really don't think the person that took him or found him will turn in a valuable dog. That is like finding a bag of money on the street. Honest people are getting harder and harder to find. But, we will say that your dog is found by an honest person. The dog is turned into the shelter, adopted out, ---- story ends. |
wow? Good question! Deserves thought... Your right...I've not thought of that before... I just know if they are lost and picked up at a Shelter its easy to identify them... You have us ALL THINKING!! Melissa & "baby Sophie" :aimeeyork |
Very good question! I think the shelter is the only place where the chip will come in handy. They 'should' check for a chip before doing anything else with your dog. |
I found a stray a couple of months ago. The first thing they did at the animal hospital was check for a chip (unfortunately he didn't have one). So some places do check... |
When Zsa Zsa have been stollen , I immediately called the 1-800 on the card I received from Avid , I placed flyers . She have been found 3 days later , she was outside of the city . |
Anyone ever thought about a tattoo? There are several different chip companies and vets would have to have scanners to each company.. Tattoo's are very visible.. easily identified just by a quick look.. |
When I took Cookie for his first vet appt. they did not check or scan him.The same thing happened when I took Mimi. Honestly I think 90% of the vets will NOT remember to scan a pet that comes in for a first time visit. I personally think it will only come in handy if your dog is taken to a shelter.I would not hesitate staying up the whole night printing several hundred flyers and put them up as soon as possible that next morning.I would also take the flyers to any shelters near my area. And mail out flyers to shelters at least within a 200 mile radius of my home. Just thinking about it breaks my heart.I like my vet but I do NOT like some of the staff that works for him. Alot of them are "big dog lovers" So when they look at me walking in with this little thing , I usually get a giggle ,not a "aww how cute" but more like " that's not a dog!" Theonly convenience I have is that they are like 2 miles from my house and it takes me 3-4 minutes to get there. So I am still looking for a vet that specializes in smallbreeds. I know I've seen one in my town before. Genie |
