Open up!! Do you ever want to examine what your dog has in it's mouth but you know if you move in to grab them they may swallow it to keep you from "taking their treasure"? I have this delimna once or twice a day. Does anyone have a solution? I am trying to train them to "drop it" and it is working with Hefner, but Chai is a different story. She is so possessive about her things and she hordes! Any suggestions? |
I used the 'drop it' command with Jo too and it worked but there were plenty of times I would have to stick my finger in his mouth to retrieve what was there. Several of those times left me saying 'oh gross!!'...earthworms were a biggie with Jo and he almost seemed to laugh when I'd reach in and find one! Now that he's older he's made a game out of it...he grabs something, I say 'drop it!' so he drops it, tucks his stubby tail under and runs away. |
When I first started training Sully as a puppy, I included "drop it" as part of my commands. When he dropped it, I would give him a treat. Now, he will drop it immediately when I say so...but, he gives me about a second to get whatever he dropped and will pick it back up again, haha. I think he realizes that I don't have a treat and he wants to play a game (I'm sure you know how this goes.) I don't have any better suggestions than that, but it's possible and Sully picked it up in just a couple training "sessions"! Good luck! |
Since I have so many meds to take at night and many of them can be dangerous for my babies, I live in fear of droping one and having them grab it. The very first command mine must learn is DROP IT! For all that they don't listen to, I am happy to say, they do respond to this command. I do not call a name when I give that command cause looking down on them a couple look really similar. So, I have 6 puzzled faces and one little guy dropping something.. |
Yes, pills would be a great reason to train them to respond immediately to that command. I guess I just need to keep working with Chai! Thnks for the advice. It makes me feel less alone. :D |
My problem is they run off with what the get in their mouth so fast I can hardly catch them and then we do a dance all around the bed -- back and forth, back and forth......I guess I need to figure out how to teach the drop it command too, though I must admit all the chasing is keeping me in shape. LOL. |
When Rocky has something in his mouth, I shake his treat jar and he drops everything and comes running! Maybe you could try treat bribery? It works for us and you just never know what these babies will put in there mouths! Yesterday, Rocky ate an entire tube of my daughter's mint chocolate chapstick! Oh, well! At least his breath smelled good! |
i get into my playful voice and she comes over to show me her treasure. then i grab her and quickly grab the item out of her mouth. drop it doesn't work for coco, she thinks its a game if catch me. |

Good Question. I always walk Maggie down to the main road, on a leash to get the mail. On our way, was a dead snake. She nearly broke her next to get it. I told her No, No and kept going. Yesterday on our trip, I forgot about the snake, but Maggie didn't. Before I could react, she had it in her mouth. I really looked like an idiot, trying to TALK something out of her mouth. Finally after I got firm and told her "DROP THAT D--- SNAKE", did she finally give it up. There are just some things that I won't go into her mouth and get, and this was one of them. |
well tucker is afraid and stops what ever he's doing if you say something really loud and sternly. if you say no he stops and runs away if he picks something up and i say drop it he puts it down i think he knows hes doing something wrong so when i say something in my no voice to him he knows he's in trouble and he shouldn't do it |
I'm with the bribery crowd - I started with "Tuck, do you want a cookie?" then "Drop it," which he kind of had to do to put the cookie in his mouth... He's gotten much better now when I use a certain voice and say "Come to Mama, now spit it out, drop it" It's not an instant thing but I keep reinforcing with a cookie or tons of lavish praise when he gets it right and we seem to be on our way... Let me know if you figure something out for Chai. All my will drop it on command but I've seen some dogs that would ignore the command when there are really good food involved. I really don't what to do either. |
