Stinky boy!!! I can't take it anymore! He's stunk up my bedroom for the LAST time! Beau is stinky. Plain and simple. I've tried washing him 2-3 times a week. I've tried special yorkie shampoo, I've tried oatmeal shampoo, I've tried human shampoo, I've even tried deodorizer shampoo, but he still smells like wet shoes!!! I brought him to the vet thinking there has to be a reason for this like fungi on the skin or something, but nope. He's just a stinky male! After a bath he will smell good for all of 1 hour then he smells like he hasn't seen the bath tub (we humans call it the kitchen sink :D ) in his life! I don't know what to do, I'm at my wits end! I'm going to resort to shaving him down (especially after that bad haircut I gave him last night, "the beau cut" I think we decided it was! ) Beau sleeps with me every night, so my bedroom, bedding, and basically the whole floor of my house that Beau is on smells like stinky wet tennis shoes! Its terrible and embarrassing!! Any ideas on what to wash him with or techniques? |
Something smells..... Very strange....Did you have his anal glands checked?? Thats the only reason I can come up with, typically yorkies are know to not have an odor and I get compliments on my house not smelling like dog, I say thats becuase they are not "dogs" they are furr babies. :p :p |
Have you tried changing his diet? |

grayxie: Have you tried changing his diet? I tried this too! Twice!!! I don't know what it could be! Does anyone have a dog shampoo that the smell lasts longer on so he could at least smell like a clean wet shoe? Uggh! I'm so sick of this! My friends and family gag every time they walk into the basement (where my room is) |
Mine get stinky when they get food in their hair, when I don't brush their teeth, when they lick themselves, when they go outside in the wet grass, or when I don't clean their eye boogers. Also, dirty ears or an ear infection or a poor quality diet can cause stinkiness. 3 baths a week is a lot, mine get 1 bath a week. Have you tried Buddy Wash? It really gets the stink out of mine. |

i use baby wipes to clean there face after they eat |
I was going to suggest the anal gland thing. If even a tiny drop leaks out it smells like death in the entire house. Sounds like you already checked that tho. My Schnauzer is almost 10 and she stinks too. I think it is just the elderly...:) |

Could it be seborrhea? This makes them smell really bad even shortly after a bath. You treat it by using a special medicated shampoo. In seborrhea, excessive sebum is produced and appears as dry, light-colored flakes in the hair coat or as greasy, waxy scales on the skin and hair. Because sebum is a fatty material, it becomes rancid and causes a strong coat odor. From http://www.bobmckee.com/Client%20Inf...Seborrhea.html |
I have tried the Nu-Sal and Malaseb shampoo, I have use the Malaseb shampoo for a jack russel that had no hair on her butt. you have to shampoo twice a week and leave it on for 10 mins, it has work for me, we also use it on the horses for rain rot they make a spray in this also, If I have any kind of skin problems I always use this shampoo, it is also safe for cats. The Nu-Sal T has coal tar menthol in it, I have use it also. but I really like the Malaseb best, you can go there web site DVM Pharmaceuticals, this shampoo is sold at vets and dogs.com, valley vet. I use valley vet because thats where I get all the horses meds. If I have no skin problems I use buddy wash and rinse on them. |

Will he let you brush his teeth with a finger brush? It could be his teeth. |
My brother has a female pitbull/chocolate lab mix who has the same problem! About an hour after a bath she smells to high heaven! Poor girl! Noone wants to pet her or touch her bc of her stink and she is sooo affectionate! My brother took her to the vet also and the vet told him to give her fish oil pills, one a day. He does not do that though so I dont know if it works or not but thats what his vet said to do. Maybe you can try that? |
Is he on any medication that could cause a stinky side effect? |
